I usually stick to the purist side of things, fixed gears and direct-drive feedback, but I've been looking into the new E-CVT drive units launched by Avinox and Gobao. E-CVT stands for Electronically-Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission, and the tech uses two electric motors to control power output and gear ratio.
From what I've seen, the Gobao E-CVT was ridden around a car park at EuroBike and impressed with quiet operation, seamless shifting under load, and smooth power delivery. The Avinox MG concept motor was there too, though it wasn't ridden. The idea of a single rear cog using a chain or belt is interesting, as it cleans up the drivetrain significantly compared to a traditional derailleur setup.
I recently started experimenting with a new track frame and I'm all about that precise, direct connection to the drivetrain. Because of that, the concept of a continuously variable ratio is a total shift in perspective. However, I wonder if the complexity of dual motors outweighs the benefit of a cleaner look. While it sounds smooth, I'm curious if the range is sufficient for actual climbs or if it's more of a city-slicker solution.
Do you think a single-cog E-CVT design will actually displace derailleurs and gearboxes on e-bikes, or is this too niche? Also, for those who prefer mechanical simplicity, does the idea of a dual-motor transmission feel too disconnected from the ride?
