I've been thinking about the recent Paris-Roubaix and how the event is evolving. The women's race first ran in 2021 after a COVID-related cancellation in 2020, and for several editions through 2025, it was held on a Saturday with roughly three hours of coverage. However, this year the women's race was moved to Sunday and overlapped with the men's race.
What really caught my eye was the broadcast window. TV coverage of the women's race began with 58 km of 143 km remaining, meaning seven of the 20 cobbled sectors had already been completed before we joined in. While organizers reported the Sunday move was to maximize roadside crowds, some believe it might have been a cost-cutting measure.
It was still a thrilling race, with Marianne Vos taking a very close second place, but I wonder if the presentation did the athletes justice. Should the women's Paris-Roubaix return to a standalone Saturday broadcast with fuller coverage, even if that means smaller roadside crowds? Or was the same-day arrangement a fair compromise for the growth of the event?
