  1. I've spent a lot of time lately helping mountain bikers transition over to road geometry, often focusing on how endurance frames can help bridge that gap in comfort. While I usually talk about drop bars, the new Merida Speeder range caught my eye as an interesting middle ground for those who aren't quite ready for the aggressive lean of a road bike but want more versatility than a standard hybrid.

    Looking at the specs, the Speeder range now fits 45mm tyres stock and has 50mm clearance, which is a significant jump for a flat-bar bike. The prices range from £800 for the Speeder 100 up to £1,500 for the Speeder 500. Interestingly, the Speeder 500 uses a carbon fork from the Silex gravel range, which should help with vibration damping on those rougher commutes. All models have aluminium frames and hydraulic disc brakes, and there is even a step-through frame option now available across the range.

    For someone moving from a mountain bike, the upright position of a flat-bar setup is often much more welcoming than a race-oriented road bike. However, there is always the question of efficiency once you start putting in more miles on the tarmac. I'm curious if the added tire volume and the upright geometry make this a more practical daily driver than a traditional drop-bar gravel bike, especially for those who prioritize comfort and utility over pure speed.

    Do you think the flat-bar setup is a better real-world trade-off for light off-road use and commuting? For those who have made the switch from MTB, do you find that a hybrid-style geometry satisfies your need for stability, or do you eventually miss the aerodynamic advantage of drop bars?
