  1. The footage from Stage 2 of the 2026 Renewi Tour is quite sobering. A crash occurred on that stage, triggered by contact between riders near the front of the peloton. Seeing Jonathan Milan go down as one of the riders involved shows how precarious positioning is at those speeds, even though Milan eventually continued the race.

    These high speed pile ups feel like a recurring theme when the roads are wide enough to allow a massive, chaotic drag race. When the peloton can maintain 70 km/h in a wide bunch, a single touch of wheels creates a domino effect that is almost impossible to avoid. Narrow, rolling finish circuits naturally string out the peloton, which I believe is safer than the wide open sprints we often see.

    If organizers want to reduce the severity of these incidents, they should look at how road geometry influences speed. Reducing the width of the approach to the finish could force a more controlled pace and prevent the bunch from becoming a wall of momentum. Organizers must eliminate 90 degree corners in the final kilometer of bunch sprint stages to further mitigate risk.

    Do you think narrowing the road profiles for sprint stages would actually reduce the frequency of these mass pile ups, or would it just create different bottlenecks?
