Ground clearance is a major factor: if the frame is too low, it is easy to scrub the underside on uneven patches or rocks. Then there is the handling on loose surfaces, where weight distribution differs from a standard upright bike.

    Frame strength and geometry should dictate the actual limits of the ride. While some look to tire choices to extend a bike's capability, the physical clearance of the frame remains the hard limit for the terrain.

    What specific ground clearance measurements do you consider the minimum for handling light gravel or uneven paths? How do you balance tire width against the available frame clearance to keep the bike stable on loose surfaces?

  2. Stability on loose surfaces is less about the nominal width of the tire and more about the interaction between the contact patch and the substrate. Increasing width allows for lower inflation pressures, which expands the contact patch and enables the casing to deform over micro-irregularities. This increases the mechanical keying of the tire into the gravel to improve friction. However, there is a point of diminishing returns where excessive width can compromise lateral stability if the casing lacks sufficient structural stiffness. The balance should prioritize the lowest pressure possible without risking rim strikes or casing squirm, while leaving enough clearance for debris to pass without scrubbing the frame.
