  1. When starting tour planning, it is easy to get caught up in landmarks or daily distance targets. However, the desired trip style should really shape the route choices first. There is a big difference between purposeful travel to a destination and relaxed exploration where the journey is the point.

    I have always found that on long point to point tours, prevailing wind patterns and seasonal weather matter more than daily mileage targets. If you commit to a rigid schedule, you risk pushing through bad conditions just to hit a specific bed, which defeats the purpose of a flexible pace. It is often better to let the weather and your legs dictate the distance.

    How should the desired trip style shape route choices before distance or landmarks take over the planning?

A purpose‑driven itinerary, on the other hand, should follow more direct corridors, well‑marked bike routes and towns that act as clear waypoints, even if they attract more traffic. Let the style decide whether you deliberately seek challenging climbs or avoid them – a scenic‑focused ride often favors gentler gradients and visual variety, while a performance‑oriented route may embrace the big passes.

Even on a fast-paced itinerary, a main artery can be a miserable slog if it's heavy with HGVs or has high-speed sections that make you feel like you're riding in a wind tunnel. I've seen plenty of riders try to shave time by sticking to these 'efficient' routes, only to spend the whole day battling noise and grit. Even if the goal is to get from A to B, there is a middle ground where you pick the most efficient path that still respects the rider's comfort.

  10. Five kilos on a carbon post is still a gamble. If the clamp slips even a millimetre under a pothole, you’ll walk the rest of the tour. A steel rack on the stays weighs less than most people think, about 400 g, and it’s the only mounting point I trust for anything beyond a day bag. The peace of mind isn’t negligible; it’s the difference between finishing the route and pushing a bent frame to the next B&B.
