Number 1 son wants to join me on long rides, but he has outgrown his depleted uranium cheap kids' MTB. He'll be 12 this summer, and it would be nice to get him something that will last until 15 or 16, so something with a compact frame would clearly be a good idea. He's impressed with the idea of a tourer, wants drops and will be completely okay with mudguards etc.
I don't see anything like this available for his age range on retail here -- any suggestions?

Yes, I know what you mean. S&H is very taken with the compact OCR in the bike shop, though...

My daughter when 12 went for the TCR Compact Road :-(

Decathlon do one. Giant do a TCR Junior as well. Both look like nice bikes.

Good one -- we are going to be in France (with a bike rack) before we definitively "need" this bike...

Decathlon are good and have some great bargains in the sales sometimes, I bought a half price BMX just after Xmas for my eight year old. If you get a chance check out Go Sport too, and maybe also the larger supermarkets, although quality varies in those. Of the bikes we have bought since moving from Ireland, we have two from Decathlon, two from Go Sport and one from Carrefour. The Carrefour one was for my son, aged 12, it is a full size bike but he is fine on it. That one was an impulse purchase (also half price!) and I thought we might have to buy another one in the meantime of the size you are after, but he is safe and happy on it. Have fun shopping :-) -- Holly, in France Holiday Home in Dordogne http://la-plaine.chez.tiscali.fr/
Though I have to say I am not well disposed to frames with unnecessarily curved tubes, and suspect the front suspension is more trouble than it is worth.
There's also a cheap "road" bike that might do the job, particularly if it can accommodate real mudguards and a rear carrier:
Somewhat compact frame, so we can cope with his leg length by lowering the saddle a lot to begin with, and making him stretch for the bars :-)
