Cats in tents

Cats are *highly* territorial. Each camp site ?belongs? to one or more of
the local cats, who will give any incommers a very hard time.

Anyone foolish enough to take a cat camping deserves to get their tent
shredded! They will be disturbed by being away from their territory, preyed
on by other cats, foxes etc, prone to getting lost and will get in a deep
sulk and probably never trust you again!

Yes I have a cat (even quite fond of it) but camping with it - never!

I told my cat about this proposal, and it sends you a hiss and a
scratch....

When I was a small kid, we used to take the cat on camping holidays
(caravan, not tent). I don't remember a lot about it myself but my
parents tell me that he used to enjoy it. Except beaches - the vast
expanse of nothingness out to the horizon used to spook him.

In general though, unless your cat is as odd as that one, I wouldn't
advise it.

If you find out, please let me know as well.

Not that we intend to take our cats camping, but when we have put a tent up
in the back garden the cats have had a wonderful time shooting up between
the inner and outer skins (usually on their backs) and thoughfully
increasing the general ventilation.

If you intend to persisit in this folly, I would recommend a traditional
sturdy canvas tent which is more robust than the modern lightweight nylon.

Occasionally you do get a cat that behaves more like a dog (goes for walks
with you, happy to travel in the car, doesn't wander at night) but I think
this is very rare.
We have only had one (long gone now) and I certainly wouldn't take our
current pair camping or caravanning.

Apart from anything else, what are you going to do with it during the day?

If you go walking you can take a dog with you, but the cat is less likely to
cooperate (or get on with any dogs you meet).

Leaving it behind at the tent will only encourage it to wander (even set off
for home without you).

If you are not proposing walking, of course, this may be the wrong news
group? :-)

We used to take our cat, Sam, to the caravan. I can just about
remember (it was 30 years ago) her being inside a cardboard box on the
floor of the back of the car and seeing her claws sticking out of the
small gap in the top.

Apparently, she used to hide under the caravan for the first day but
was fine afterwards.

However, I would not let a cat anywhere near a tent ...... unless we
had a mutually agreed arrangement that one of us was going to be
turned into a Davey Crocket hat should any lacerations appear in the
flysheet.

Use a stuff sac. If you tie it up hard enough you could probably also use
it as a pillow.

Many years ago we took a kitten camping - it was too young to be left at
home or with anyone anyway. He was brilliant and never misbehaved, and
if we left him for a short while in the zipped up inner tent he was
fine. He went everywhere with us - on a lead though

he was a bit overawed by the beach, I think he thought it was just one
HUGE toilet!

BTW Fran - I don't think you'll find any scratch marks in the old tent
:-)
