What I don't understand is Pam and Dean's state of denial that the guy

I discussed this with a friend of mine on a long run over the weekend. She
won the Miwok 100k a couple of years back, and Dean was very nice to her,
cheering her on as they passed in an out and back section of the course.
She saw DK speak at a book signing (and thinks she was the only ultrarunner
in the crowd, btw), and DK in response to her question did pay homage to
Kouros, calling him one of the greats, or the greatest, if I remember our
conversation correctly. She did say that he paused a good while before
commenting on her obviously knowledgable question.
Part (not all) of this breathless hype is due to the fact that the reporters
interviewing DK aren't nearly as well informed as reporters covering the
home football team, for example. And they're certainly not as informed as
most experienced ultra runners are. So they don't ask the right questions,
and make effusive and misleading statements.
