I was wondering if an ultegra 9spd. 52T ring is compatible with a 39T. I just got a crankset with this set up. I know they make a 53T "A" and "B" type ring, but I didn't know about 52T rings. Any comments appreciated.

According to Shimano's docs their standard 52T chainring for the 6500 series is "B" type (39 small) (part# 16T 9801)
see:

thanks for the good info.

52/53 'A' and 'B' chainrings work perfectly with the 39T.
I'm using the "wrong" combination since many many kilometers and I never noticed a difference in any situation.Do a google group search in rec.bicycling.tech, I remember some posts about this topic.
