  1. I'm writting this post partly as a warning, partly because some help would be welcome and partly
because I need to put words to my frustration.

Saturday a week ago I was surfing looking for interesting parts for my bike or perhaphs even a good
deal on a new bike. So I check out what's on ebay and find a good deal on a Specialized Enduro:

    cgi.ebay.co.ukeBayISAPI.dll

I mail the guy through eBay with a few questions and also because I wanna check him out due to it
being the first thin he sells on eBay, and he answers me back with the info I request corcerning the
bike size and if it will fit me also in effect reasureing me that while he is a new seller he is
totally legit. He also tells me that he is currently in the UK and that he is willing to pay for the
delivery. This of course only makes the offer look even better as having the bike send within the EU
means no tax to pay at customs and so.

He's eager to close the deal and since no one has so far made an offer on the bike he offers to
close the auction ahead of schedule, in effect meaning we deal without using ebay. To make a short
story long we agree on the $1100 and come monday I mail the money through Western Union. My name is
causing a few problems, there's a none english letter in it and also in my adress so retrieving the
money becomes a little difficult because Western Union has changed one letter to another but
sometime tuesday after a few mails back and forth he is able to withdraw the money. Now - his
withdrawl of the money I only know because of checking it on the Western Union site because I have
heard nothing since the last mail about how to spell my name in english:-(

So in short I have send $1100 to a guy that looks to have grabbed the money and since decided to
ignore me completely. Question is should I just wait some more or do you guys think this is a case
    for the police?

I would like to try to get in touch with the guy in another fashion than just email, but I have not
been able to find his telephone number or even verify the adress he has provided. So I wonder if
anyone in the group knows how to find some info on this guy?

    NAME😄ANI MISCHI ADDRESS:352 BARKING ROAD CITY:LONDON ZIP:E13 8HL COUNTRY: UK

Supposedly he's from the US currently staying in the UK and in ebay he's registrered as residing in

    ELLENSBURG United States /Seattle-Tacoma

And his email is Dani Bruce <[email hidden]>

If any of you is in the market for a Enduro I suggest you wait till this matter has been resolved
before you buy something from the Dani guy!

Now I would like to think that the reason I have heard nothing from him since he has gotten the
money is due to some family emergency or something, but it's been more than a week now so one has
    to wonder.

I still hope the deal comes true and I get the bike, partly because else my money is lost and I'll
have to stick with my 1998 FSR Elite for a while(no new bike this year for sure), but even more so
because I so far have had the luxury that whenever I have made arrengements to buy stuff from people
on the net it has been good experiences and I really want to keep it that way. Maybe I'm just naive?

    What you all think?

    Kind regards

I'd complain to eBay, and I would have used an escrow service (eBay has their own) to pay him. The
service will not give him your money until you verify you got the goods, and would refund you if he
fails to deliver. Based on eBay's response, I'd probably involve the police as well.

    Good luck.

the transaction was technically outside of ebay, so they wash their hands of it.

Police may help, considering the sum of money. you have a receipt from western union, correct?

Sad story. My dad lost his toolbox that he's been carrying for probably 50 years or so last year and
posted an ad in the paper. He got a call from a "truck driver" in NJ that said he'd bought it cheap
while passing through NC and then heard about the ad. Dad was all ready to wire this guy a couple of
hundred dollars, some it ended up being too fishy. The next week a lady called him that she'd found
his toolbox, about five miles from his house. It just fell out the back of the truck.

Surely you have some hacker/cracker friends, or friends of friends, that can do some investigative
work and track down a phone number for this guy. Buy them beer [even though it isn't cheap in
Danmark], whatever to get the information, then call, call call until you track him down. It's
probably a misunderstanding, but keep after him.

because I need to put words to my

    frustration.

I was recently shopping around for a fairly expensive camera on ebay. I saw several listing from
different people; all substantially less than normal prices.

Here is one response I got when I asked about the possibility of using an escrow:

"Before you bid on my auction for an itm or more I want you to know that for the moment I accept
payment only in cash either through wire transfer or direct pick-up.The reason for that is that I
am currently in Spain where me and my partner supplied capital for the purchase of a bankrupt
    stores stock.

Now we are trying to sell the remaining stock.

The units are brand new sealed in their original boxes. They ship with all the accessories provided
by the manufacturer and have 1 year of international warranty provided by the factory and will be
available at every Nikon service center in your country. All the manuals and the original
documentation are written in eight languages. You will receive your package in 2 working days.

I send all my packages having written on them "display unit, no comercial value" or as a gift so you
don't have to pay any additional taxes(VAT included).

Please let me know ASAP if you are interested and I will allow you to bid or we can arrange a
private deal to save time and money. I have preffered this special type of auction because of the
multiple problems I've had in the past with bidders who were jusy bidding for the sake of it,but
weren't interested in buying any item.

Mail me soon and let me know.

    Thanks for your understanding!"

Then, when I said I'd only use escrow, she wrote back:

"I used Escrow before and as I mentioned I was not very satisfied that is why I mentioned in the
auction as well that I don't accept.

This is how we can proceed. You will make a transfer to me. I will check and then immediatly shipp
the item. As soon as you receive it you will mail me with [censored] details for the transfer so I can
    collect the funds"

Here was another scammer's response: "Hello Sir.

The shipping is made from Italy

Also if you are interested and you want to have the deal but you are affraid for the safety here is
a good solution. I am a honest man and ensure you that the deal will be a succes. Here is what you
can do:I told you that the payment will be sent with Western Union wire service and that means that
you will directly send money to me. Here is the deal:you go to the W U office and send the money we
agred on to an name that you want ( a relative or a friend ) and any Italy location that you want (
you can use mine too ). The money must be sent in Italy because i need to make the validation from
here and if they are not in my country i'll be unable to do that. For the validation you will give
me the folowing details: -MTCN number -sender name and address -receiver name that you have used
-exact amount wired I will make the validation and see if the money are there and then proceed with
the shipping. I will TRUST you and send the Camera to your shipping address. I will mail you the
traking # from UPS. As soon as the package arrives you test the product and see if all OK but i am
sure that will be. After 48 of trial if you decide that is OK you call W U and tell that you want to
change the receiver name and give them my name so that i can cash the money.

This way we will both receive our goods. Mail me soon and let me know your opinion on this."

Followed up by: "i have one more request if that is possible with you. when you will go to the W U
office please dont tell that you want to send me money to me for a deal or that you are making a
payment. please declare that you are sending money to an relative in Greece ( you will use a
relative name at the receiver i think ) or that is a financial help for a friend. please do that for
2 reasons: -i think (that is the way in Greece) you will be charged (extracharged) if you send money
for a deal (payment) than if you simply send money to someone -at the end when i will pick up the
funds i wont pay the 15% from the amount to the state as taxes

and if you want i can declare at UPS that the package is a gift for you and you wont pay any
    custom on it."

All [censored]. Their ads were even yanked from ebay without explanation.

I bought one from Cord Camera and was completely satisfied.

    <snip scam>

I was involved with a similar scam, also for a camera. This guy was selling the cameras cheap, and
they were consistently going for more than the "buy it now" price. So I used the "buy it now"
feature and made the sale. It was only then the guy said he'd only accept a WU wire and that he was
in Eastern Europe. So I told him I'd only do that when I had the camera in hand and that if someone
had to take a risk because of his preferences then it would have to be him. He agreed and I gave him
my office shipping address (so he didn't have too much personal info on me). Then I got a call from
B&H photo online camera store saying someone had tried to buy a camera to be shipped to me in
someone else's name with a stolen credit card.

So the scam was he uses stolen cards to buy and drop-ship right to the buyer. Then the buyer gets
implicated with the theft and he gets away with my money. Lucky for me the camera place called me
and let me know what was going on and that I would not be getting the camera. Then several months
later the guy who's name was on the order from the camera place tried to contact me to find out why
I was charging stuff on his card. I told him the story and he never got back to me. All pretty
weird, but I ended up coming out of it OK because I would not rely on the honesty of others. I
either use escrow or make them take the risk of being scammed. Seems to work so far, but this one
could have gotten me in trouble...

going to be turned off by the pseudo-shady look of the seller, which means the price would stay low.

Now I would like to think that the reason I have heard nothing from him since he has gotten the
money is due to some family emergency or something, but it's been more than a week now so one has
    to wonder.

I still hope the deal comes true and I get the bike, partly because else my money is lost and I'll
have to stick with my 1998 FSR Elite for a while(no new bike this year for sure), but even more so
because I so far have had the luxury that whenever I have made arrengements to buy stuff from
people on the net it has been good experiences and I really want to keep it that way. Maybe I'm
    just naive?

    What you all think?

    Kind regards

    Hello,

Saw your USENET post. This same guy is trying to sell me a guitar based on a bid I put in on eBay.
He says he's in London but seems to have a Romanian email address: [email hidden]. He seems
to have somehow hijacked the account of a British eBay user named "littabug" -- I say hijacked b/c
this user has a long history of good feedback. I have notified eBay UK. The address Mr. Mischi
wanted me to send the Western Union to is the same one you posted. I smelled a rat, especially given
that the picture he sent me of the guitar was clearly lifted from a US website, and he claims his
brother took the photo. I have been stringing him along for about a week now, taking advantage of
his poor English to thoroughly confuse him. He keeps asking why I have not sent payment yet. The
    exchange has been quite hilarious.

I am sorry to hear that you had such an experience. I hope you find some way of working it out.
Maybe the above email address will help.

    Best wishes,

    John
