Not very likely. Of the 800 or so people who die on bikes every year only 2.1 die per day. This is
nationwide and those 2 are likely to be P.O.B's or kids darting into street. If you follow a helmet
law how long before you have no freedoms? -

saw about three or four wearing helmuts. One I know was an American woman that brought her own
bike and helmut over. Possibly the others were also tourists. I certainly wasn't one of those
wearing a helmut.Don <donwiss at panix.com>.

Same to you. Hope you had a good Cinqo de Mayo, too. I know I did.

Clearly you must have had a very severe fall on your head already.

Please do. While you're at it please drive without a seat belt or shoulder harness. Also, remove
those pesky air bags that just take up space on the dash. If you're a construction worker please
don't wear a hard hat while on the job (I'm sure they're uncomfortable anyway). While we're at it we
should remove some safety systems from our commercial aircraft so that we could save money on air
fare. Also, if you're in the US and plan to celebrate the Fourth of July please use whatever
explosive device you'd like in any manner you'd like. And don't forget to yell "fire" the next time
you're in a crowded theatre.I daresay that no one wants additional laws. But however you feel about helmets or their
effectiveness it is totally irresponsible to discourage people from using any type of safety
equipment.I for one will counter the irresponsible behaviour of this person by riding with my helmet and
hopefully setting a good example for others."Jkpoulos7" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

Proud To have a conviction for it.

Will disconnect them when I buy a new vehicle

SIDEWALK RIDER (with apologies to Stephen Stills)
I could be a Klansman from a Southern trial I don't pay taxes 'cause I never file I don't wear
helmets, they don't make me smile I love my Cannondale 'cause she got styleI'm a sidewalk rider
I'll do any sidewalk that you can say to run Those bush league riders they just can't get the
job done You got to ride up onto the sidewalk You don't never see the sun There's no such thing
as an easy runI'm a sidewalk rider Born survivor
People been askin' me where'd ya learn to ride that way It was down in the underground, in
the U.S.A. The militia taught me an' they taught me right: Get up onto the sidwalk you might
be all rightSidewalk rider
So I'm comin' home I'm runnin' low and fast Promised my woman this'n gonna be my last I get the ship
down, I tie her fast And then some ole boy walks up and he says Hey son, you gotcherself a nice assSidwalk rider
Well there's things I am and there's things I'm not I am a bigot with a right wing plot I ain't
going to quit, you ain't gonna make me stop You see I'm a Usenet fool and the Cannondale Is
just too hotI'm a sidwalk rider Born survivor Usually ride alone

Please do. While you're at it please drive without a seat belt or shoulder harness. Also, remove
those pesky air bags that just take up space on the dash.Excellent idea, with the potential for real road safety benefits. The compulsory use of seat belts
was responsible for the largest ever recorded rise in pedestrian, cyclist and rear-seat passenger
fatalities in the UK, and the measured benefit to drivers was negligible declining to zero in under
two years.Quoted message said:
I daresay that no one wants additional laws. But however you feel about helmets or their
effectiveness it is totally irresponsible to discourage people from using any type of safety
equipment.Encouraging people to wear helmets without full knowledge of the extremely limited extent of the
protection they offer is also grossly irresponsible.Helmets are designed for single-vehicle crashes up to about 12mph
(i.e. falling off at slow speeds). They are good for kids, and of limited benefit to adults. There
are credible mechanisms by which helmets can worsen injuries given a crash, and a great deal
of research which indicates that wearing a helmet makes a crash more likely in the first
place. Any crash involving a otor vehicle will be outside the helmet's design parameters.Claims for the protective effect of helmets are based om some completely unsupportable estimates
which generally do not take into account the proportion of injuries counted as head injuries which
are to parts of the face not covered by helmets. The most widely quoted (by helmet advocates) study
also "proves" that helmets substantially reduce your chances of leg injury. There is a campaign in the UK at present to get the Government to withdraw a cyclist "safety"
website which emphasises helmet wearing above all else as a means to avoid injury, based on
"research" which completely ignores the fact that the most survivable crash is the one that doesn't
happen: no money is being spent on adult and teenage cyclist training, which would have real
benefits, or on confronting motorists with the very real danger they pose to cyclists (recent
research shows that drivers failing to yield right of way is the leading cause of fatal crashes
involving cyclists).Quoted message said:

They must finally be held accountable for the carnage that's so casually accepted by a myopically
car biased society.

The only truly incredible claims are those made by the helmet compulsion lobby stating that helmets
save 80% or more of head injuries to cyclists.Quoted message said:

Why would I do that? Would you rather believe that a poystyrene foam deflector beanie is a magic
talisman which will save you from death when Johnny SMIDSY decides today is your day to eat asphalt?
Sorry, I'm not going to do that.Read the research. All of it, not just the discredited Thompson, Rivara & Thompson paper and its
derivitives. Here is a pertinent analysis:
<http://www.lesberries.co.uk/cycling/helmets/helmets.html>. John Franklin also cites and evaluates a
lot of other papers, pro and anti.Guy

I think he was talking about the redundant safety systems built in, such as manual lowering of the
landing gear if the electrical system fails, and things along that line....the electronic voice that
yells "Terrain, terrain!" when the aircraft is nosing downward......Pat in TX
