Seeing that the older I get the more my feet are taking a beating. In my
experience, most all good running shoes have pretty poor insoles. I would
assume that this is were they can cut costs. Anyone have any good luck with
any of the sorbothane or molded rubber type insoles? I would prefer one
with a slight arch support but would consider even the flatter ones. Not
looking for any custom made orthotics but rather off-the-shelf types.
Currently I have been doing mostly trail running.

If the inserts are [censored] or not, depends on the brand. Some like my
Asics have very good, foam molded inserts, with decent arch supports.
OTOH my NB 807's had what amounted to a flat piece of felt with holes
puched through it, totally useless.

I have been using the same as you have over the last 10 years or so....
Asics (because they run wider in toe box) and various NBs......... Lately,
it seems like the NB 470 trail runners "fit my feet" the best, even though
they are a pretty cheap model. I have had lots of different model NBs in
the past and it seems that most all were the cheap black felt insoles. I
don't think my Asics were a whole lot better. I see the Spenco PolySorb

Well the Asics molded insole is a pretty good, and rugged, insole. I
used my old ones with over 1,000 miles on them, to put into my NB's in
place of the cheap felt, and they work great.
Whatever you decide on, I'd recommend staying away from orthotics if at
all possible. Those are a last resort, and should be avoided as much or
as long as possible. I'm sure a running shop could recommend a good
pair of inserts, but I know lots of people who do use them use Dr
Schools. -
