This weekend coming up will be my first crit (and really my first race). It is supposed to be 45 minutes long and is realtively flat. Should I worry about eating during the crit or just eat really well before and after. And how much should I be drinking during this time?
I usually take some Cliff bar in my jersey pocket and maybe eat a bite or two right before the start while I'm listening to the starter person. I eat a PowerBar 30 minutes before the race with some water. I take 1 bottle of drink on my bike, but as often as not, I forget to drink any of it (depending on the air temperature). The thing I really find hard to gauge is when to go to the restroom in the hour leading up to the start. Good luck.
Don't worry about eating during races that are an hour or less. Make sure you eat good the day and before and morning of. Just don't eat too much in the couple of hours before hand. I down a gel and sometimes a little bit of cliff bar right before the start. Take one water bottle with you. Good Luck.
