Millar was also an amazing descender, but we all know what happened to
him. Sanchez was damned impressive in the '04 Vuelta too.

Salvodelli has a great reputation as a descender - that precedes his winning
the Giro. But in the only Giro I had been paying attention to his relative
performance (the one in which Simoni won and Olano and Osa were in the
podium) I arrived to the conclusion that Olano and also Gontchar were
faster descenders on all the major ports of the last few days. Maybe
Salvodelli is now fully motivated (being a clear podium candidate) and he is
ready to extreme the risks he can take.

I think that things are looking not so bad for Simoni. I expect Cunego to
recover a lot of the time he lost today. But for him winning may not an
option this time (but not impossible). I expect Di Luca to blow up in the
last week and Basso and Salvodelly to lose time relative to Gibo and Cunego.

The amazing thing is that we see this pretty much the same way. I don't
think Cunego was as bad as he showed today. I'm still thinking he was
working for Simoni until we see otherwise.

You're right - Olano was a very good descender, too. I don't recall
Gonchar's (however it's spelled!) descending quite as vividly as PS and
Olano. The day Savoldelli took the Giro ('02) in hand was great simply
because the cameras were there with him as he dropped. I thought it was
spectacular, and that one really stands out in my mind.

I think Cunego will recover positions in GC (partly through attrition),
but have a hard time gaining back much time. As I mentioned earlier (some
other thread), I don't have really high hopes for DiLuca in the overall. He
just hasn't got a very good track record in GTs. I don't think he'll blow
up so much as slowly tail off as the days go by. I think he's got a top ten
in him. Maybe even a top five. I agree that Simoni is going quite well, but
I think Basso looks very strong right now. He's a smart rider, with a smart
DS and a good team behind him. He'll be tough to beat, I think.

I have to think "Save our Deli" every time I spell his name now, to make

Thought it was 'grace and dignity', but I may be thinking of the wrong
movie. In any event, don't need any of it to place on the podium,
