Last I heard a lot of that stuff was very, very wet. You can check the cota

having ridden MRT exactly once, that makes me an expert .
The few climbs on the MRT, as I recall are pretty easy, nothing to get your
heart pounding. I can't make a tire recommendation, I just ride what ever is
on the bike anyway. ;-) You are a stud, I would think the SS would be find
but what do I know?
While the trail is very buff in places, it's rainforest buff, not Idaho
mountain buff. Some places are fairly technical due to narrow trail
threading through old lava that is over grown through forest. So, it's slow
and tricky threading through that stuff. I would expect slippery goo this
time of year.
The top few miles around the lake are burly just because it is so twisty
through the lava. High penalty for failure to make a turn. It's weird too
as some of it is paved for the barneys. The signage at the bottom (west
end ) of the lake is wrong... you go left, not right or you end up at the
top of the lake again. Some people skip the lake portion entirely, it's
just a few miles.
The very bottom of the trail is smooth sailing, truly buff, through cedar
forest. Have fun!!
