There are wonderful books by Altigraph which show profiles & even tell
you which gears to use.

Yes, I presume that's the one John was referring to, which I already
have in my bookmarks.

I'm wondering more about maps, ie something to put the climbs in some
kind of geographical context - general road maps are OK, but are
designed to highlight the points of interest to car drivers rather than
cyclists.

Given that the Alps is such a cyclist mecca, I thought such a thing
might exist - if not, someone (ie an astute publisher) is missing a
trick (same principle applies to other regions of cycling pilgrimage).
Maybe Dan's link answers my question...
