Okay. I'm going to update an old Kona Lave Dome that I bought for trail riding. It has a 1" threaded Project Two fork on it right now. Should I bother looking for a threaded suspension fork or should I just upgrade it to an unthreaded style. Will I have to keep the travel small in order not to upset the way the bike rides. What would be a good recomendation for forks for trail riding? Any help would be great.

I have just done something similar only with an 1" 1/8th steerer. I just went for the threadless system and bought an entirely new front end. The threadless systems are so much nice imho. You wont find a threaded fork new btw. You would have to get the threads put on which to me seems like far too much faffing about.
The bike was not designed for sus forks and lots of shops said it would screw the balance, but it feels fine although I have only used an 85mm travel fork.
I bought Marzocchi MX Comp forks btw, a bargain at £130.

Finding a new 1" unthreaded suspension fork will be difficult, finding a threaded one that's new , that's a big order. You could try ediscountbike.com, they have old stuff that might work. Try to stay away from used forks, I'm 0 for 3 on those, unless someone gives you one for free. Rockshox makes a low-level fork that has a 70-115mm wind-down travel adj. You don't want a fork with probably anymore than a 1" dropout to top of crown difference than your present fork, otherwise you'll get major wheel-flop on the climbs.🙂

hmmmmm. I don't entirely agree with this. This is the argument put forward by retailers and manufacturers to protect themselves. The fork I put on my rigid frame has a considerably difference than the 1" suggested by the above poster. I have found the bike is more stable on the flats and handling on climbs has not really changed. The only disadvantage that I can cite is the cost. -
I've upgraded from rigid to suspension 3 times, 2 times worked well, one was a failure. That's why I recommended the Rockshox Judy SL. If you use an 80mm travel fork it may be OK. For every inch of dropout to crown rise it changes the head angle 1 degree. I have an old Litespeed hardtrail that I wanted to put a longer travel fork on, it made climbing up tight singletrack a major chore.🙂

Have any of you had problems with frames breaking after adding suspensionto an older design bike? The bike started out as a CinderCone(aluminum) until the head snaped off while riding downhill. I replaced it with the LaveDome(steel) frame and haven't had a problem with it ever. All the shops keep telling me it won't work and trying to sell me a new bike. 😠
