Plotting pace (that is, 1/t) against heart rate, I was surprised how good a fit the linear model gave me -- R^2 = 0.9981. Basically a perfect straight line.
Which is odd because I'd understood that there should be an inflexion (second derivative changes sign) on the curve and this defines the "anaerobic" or "lactic" threshold (whatever that may mean exactly).
Or maybe you didn't get that high (what is your max HR)?
Yeah, I understand your point. You might expect that as anaerobic metabolism picks up, you no longer have a linear relationship between energy and speed since anaerobic metabolism is contributing proportionately more of the energy, and the proportion is rapidly increasing. As you say, maybe I just didn't go far up enough for it to be visible. Maybe you need to go some way past LT (past the turning point into the actual spike) to really see this phenomenom.
My max heart rate is moderately high for my age. It goes between 190 and 200 depending on how overtrained or undertrained I am at the time. Right now, I'm sort of in the middle, so maybe ~195. So LT should be a bit lower than 183 (and for that matter slower than 5:52)

However, just because one is above LT does not mean that one's O2 consumption has stopped. It is still increasing. As one nears VO2max, HR will tend to level out as does O2 consumption.
