Does it start the first week in July? Will they have the website this
    year
that shows each day's profile, progress, etc.?

    Thanks.

The TDF usually starts on the first Saturday of the month, and ends three
weeks later on the third Sunday. They have a fairly complete website at
www.LeTour.fr, with an english-language option that isn't terribly dumbed
down. For more interesting behind-the-scenes coverage, you might check out
    www.Cyclingnews.com, www.Eurosport.com, & www.Velosport.com.

You goin' this year? I'm heading to the beach for some flat-lander riding,
but I'll be glued to the TV for the rest of the day. I'm staying at a
luxury resort owned by my brother (lol). I get three meals a day of the
best gourmet cooking you've ever tasted. After every ride I get to go jump
in the pool with all my clothes on - that's pretty cool. I'll be there all
three weeks unless he throws me out for jumping on the couch too much, lol.

Well, they changed things up a bit...I'm going no matter what, though.

Well that's 450 miles from the beach...not sure I could talk him into
driving that far, but I'll ask.

Where did you stay last year, or did you camp?

I stayed in one of the hotels they listed on the site last year. Pam_in_sc
camped with her family (actually, I think the rented a cabin of some type).
We met up at the mass start location and did the ride together.

I may attempt the back-to-back centuries on Sat/Sun. I'll get down there on
Friday evening. It's about 215 miles for me.

Have you looked through this book?:

"The Complete Book of Long-Distance Cycling : Build the Strength, Skills,
and Confidence to Ride as Far as You Want" by Edmund R. Burke, Ed Pavelka

Suggested by Gary, it gives a table of suggested training for 50, 100 and
200 mile rides (and also advice for ultras). I'm ordering it today from
Amazon, along with the new one out by Coyle:

"Lance Armstrong's War : One Man's Battle Against Fate, Fame, Love, Death,
Scandal, and a Few Other Rivals on the Road to the Tour de France"
    by Daniel Coyle

I browsed both today in B&N and they look like a great reads!

Even explains the incident on Brasstown Bald (if you read between the lines
    a bit) - there's a chapter on Floyd Landis.... ;-D

Between those two and my father's day gife (Cycling Past 50) I've got my
    summer reading all planned out!

I hope you'll train sensibly for such an attempt. Don't want you to hurt
yourself, though I'm sure you have the physical and mental chops to do it.

I got that one...read it last summer. I doubt if I'll be able to do both
centuries, though, as I have my gf along and will need to spend a day with
    her.

I enjoy cycling too much to purposely get hurt. If it got to be too much,
I'd just catch the sag wagon! 🙂

    Let's see.
One author, Burke, died young, at 53, of a heart attack while
    riding his bike

The other author, Pavelka, is well known for enthusiastically
