Hello all, as you can see from the title, i need a new bike. I'm going to be training for a race held in the spring called the Little 500 at Indiana University.
Just in case you haven't heard of the race, which i imagine you haven't: the is 33 teams on a 1/4 mile track, first to finish 200 laps wins. Teams are of 4 riders switch off riding on the same bike (so there are 33 people on the track at once).
Anyways, I'd like to keep it under $1,000 and the cheaper the better because I am a poor college student. There are all kinds of dealers in my area: Trek, Giant, Cannondale, Fuji, Bianchi, Torelli, etc.. so i have quite a few to pic from. I was thinking about just getting a Trek 1000, but I'm really just not sure.

Also, I have a 1970's Gitane 10 spd road bike. It weighs a ton. It is rusty. I'd really just like something that would be more comfortable/faster than that old thing (which i plan to convert into a fixed gear to get around campus if finances permit)
thanks for your input
