I live near Newcastle in the north-east and would like to see a Hilleberg Akto in the flesh before buying one. Does anyone know of a stockist who sells them and would be willing to put it up in the shop? The closer to Newcastle the better, but any contacts would be useful. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Most things I've read about the tent are great (unless any of you can recommend a better ultra-light tent). My one concern, which is why I'd like to see it pitched first, is that I am left-handed and so if I'm lounging about, perhaps cooking in the porch, I tend to lie on my right side and have my left hand free. The Akto has the door at what would be my natural 'foot' end of the tent, and I'd like to see if that's bearable/workable before I part with any cash.
Anyone else lie like this and have a problem with views from the Akto?

There's a dealer list for the UK at http://www.hilleberg.se Can't see anything in Newcastle, but hopefully something somewhere you'll be passing.
Beyond that, the best place to see tents pitched is on popular campsites. Wander round and if you see one ask the owner to have a look and ask what they think.

Define "better"... there are better tents in certain particular applications. For example, the Laserlite is lighter, but OTOH the Akto does various things better than the Laserlite. You can't have it all!

I didn't realise Tiso's were south of the border too. My Hilleberg came from them, and they were very happy to get it out and pitch it in the shop for me.

It says it's their first actual shop on "Albion's Plain" they have a cupboard and a few shelves in Selfridges, I think. I've never been there to find out how much they actually do have. Oh! Just checked their site and it says 3,300 square foot area so that's abut 20 x 18 yards so a bit more than a cupboard and a few shelves. Never seen an Akto or even any Hilleberg in any Newcastle shop - possibly ever! The closest would be Keswick. How do I know? well a few years ago I fancied an Akto, but settled on an ex-demo Vango instead.
Tiso in Newcastle might be worth a try. LD and Wildtrek usually have Vango, Terra Nova and the like.
Other alternative is to come to a uk.rec.walking expedition and have a browse at the Hillebergs - er, sometimes.

Of the big chains, Field and Trek and now Snow and Rock will stock them. Specialist stores in most of the main walking areas (lakes, snowdonia, etc) will have them.

I seem to remember that on Expedition 15 David Laight was sleeping in an Argos 3-person tent (rubbish) and had an Akto and a Bivvy bag in the car.
By the way, have you got wheels again? Will you be back in the hills soon?

On the Wales Expedition where we camped at Llyn Cwellyn (Rhyd-Ddu) the Akto's seemed to have bred like rabbits!

My Almera's just been classified as a write off. So I've bought......wait for it...a small Toyota Yaris. I must admit I've been thinking of using 2 cars. One for work and the other for long distance. The closest unclimbed Marilyn is now 60 miles away, possible only 20 Marilyns are within 100 miles away.
I've been told I could get a diesel 100,000 miler Focus estate for 2,700 wads. This I'd use for weekends and the Yaris for work.
Oooh b*gger. That's not nice. The cab seems untouched though, so you were protected ....... and I'm glad to see that your camping gear was OK!

Not a scratch on me, until the Mcmidge started to feel hungry while I waited for the tow truck! A lot of the damage was caused by the tow truck dragging it out, BTW!

Six feet?? Ye gods and little fishes, Jhimmy, you're lucky you weren't hurt after tumbling down that - and you probably did pretty well to get out as well. I thought (not knowing the area) that you meant a small drain-type run off, about a foot or so deep and a couple of feet wide. I am astounded at your walking away from it unscathed. No, on second thoughts I am I several stoundeds.
