PBS and NPR no longer needs the precious tax dollars of the american
people. If they had retained the merchandising rights to the Sesame
Street Characters they would be rolling in money.

And if they hadn't pushed so hard on their political agenda, they
wouldn't be getting as much flack.

OK, if that is what you want. I want the government to spend less and keep
its nose out of private lives. No reason they should fund TV or radio
broadcasts. If you want to support PBS, they do accept donations. That is
what is so great about a free society. You are free to give your money to
whomever you wish. I should be free not to.

I'm also in favor of some of the military base closings, but not all. I do
want a strong defense for my country, and top equipment for our soldiers.

I have contributed to PBS in the past but hesitate to do so now. We
have 2 stations in the metro Denver area and they often duplicate
shows, or run the same shows over and over and over again. I think
that my husband has memorized Suze Ormand's spiel.

Back in the 80's there were so many cooking shows on PBS, like for the
whole afternoon here. Now, they show Lidia on both stations at the
same time and maybe have ATK and that's mainly it. Yet, during pledge
drives they want us to join their cooking club, as if they offer so
much on cooking. It's enought to make me get cable or satellite!

If you don't want to voluntarily contribute, why do you want to use the
power of the government to coerce others to provide money?

A perfect DUer. Too cheap to get cable, but wants the rest of us to
subsidize their personal tv preferences.

Have you heard of the food network? All cooking/eating all the time,
without overt government subsidy.

educational TV that some children see. In the vast sea of [censored] that's
on TV these days, it's worth preserving.

Just curious, but why do kids need to watch any television? I became
less and less impressed with Sesame Street as my older children watched
it. It didn't seem to have the same focus on learning and wonder with
the world that it used to have. I also have a real problem with the
edutainment method. I think it sets kids up to think that all learning
should be accompanied by a soundtrack and sound byte information. This
may be part of why children have such a short attention span for school
nowadays.

I'm afraid to ask what a DUer is. When we bought our first house in
'96 we were were concerned about finances, and since the house had no
cable hook-up, just decided to go without.

say, it seems to have gone downhill. I don't think I'm missing much
without Rachel Ray.

way. The guy came to read the meter in the house and asked my (stay at
home) mother did she know I would spell? I just picked it up by myself
at 2 and 1/2 and my mother was very surprised. After that, everyone in
the family was teaching me knew words to spell. They guessed that part
of it was from The Mickey Mouse Club, because I could spell Mickey
Mouse.

LOL! I learned to write and spell before I learned to read. My
mother would point out a street sign to me and ask if I could read it.
After replying that I couldn't, she would tell me and I would say "I can
spell that" and proceed to do so.

I think this whole idea that television is "educational" is nothing but a
lot of pap. Children don't LEARN by sitting in front of a glowing box
repeating things like zombies. Children learn by DOING DOING DOING.
Getting out and learning about life, nature, etc, and most importantly BEING
READ TO and READING books. I absolutely hate the attitude that television
can teach children anything but war, violence, crime, etc. Turn off the
damn TV is my motto!
