Dear Charlie,

I think that they're all the same Davis instruments model,
meaning no real choice, just different prices. I haven't
heard of another wind meter, but perhaps someone else will
explain a booming new market.

Dear Charlie,

You can find the same stuff--anyone can do it.

Finding the cheapest source takes about 60 seconds. The only
trick is knowing that "windscribe" is what you call the
thing.

Put "windscribe" into the Froogle field on Advanced Google
and then ask for results in price order:

Suddenly you know an awful lot about low prices.

As for mounting, the windscribe comes with a half-round base
adaptor that you run a velcro strap through--fits on any
handlebar, cinches down, stays in place.

For people like me who like to flip their bikes upside-down,
the tension is enough to hold the windscribe nicely level on
rough pavement, but you can easily twist it to hang under
the bar and out of harm's way when the bike is inverted.

You can also leave the handlebar base off, use an included
lanyard, and carry the windscribe along on hikes so that you
can impress the local wildfowl with your knowledge of wind
conditions and temperature (it needs to know temperature, so
they throw in a thermometer).

Makes people with mere GPS devices bitterly envious. Sure,
they know exactly where they are, but they can only wet
their fingers and guess about what the breeze is doing.

it is actually for my brother in law living in tucson in winter and BC
in summer.. and an avid cyclist... I think he will buy it.
