I would think hard about the DigiFusion FVRT150 PVR from argos for
GBP180:

twin freeview tuners, supports simultaneous dual recording and playback
of a third programme, 7 day EPG recoding interface, 80Gb disk.
According to Digital spy some users have complained that the fan is
noisy.

I am officially in a freeview-free area but borrowed a box and it got
an OK signal- only about 25% signal strength but perfectly watchable,
much better than a weak terrestrial signal- so bought a Philips one
from Argos, do not buy one unless you are sure it will work as they
won't refund it due to no signal. You can get them combined with DVD
players/recorders and even HDD recorders which are a better idea; with
mine I have to have the box tuned in then manually set the DVD recorder
to record off the box (videoplus won't work as it only does the noral 5
channels)

If you want to be able to record things on digital channels then you'll
either need a digibox that can be set to switch on to a particular
channel at a particular time and date, or you'll want one with a built
in recorder of some description. If you're paying for one that can be
programmed to turn on when you want it to, you might as well go that bit
further and get one with a hard drive recorder.

Last year I bought a Humax digibox with 40GB hard drive, specifically
for watching le Tour. I got it from Dabs, I see that they now come with
80GB hard drives, £145 inc VAT:

Does your STB support 7 day EPG (electronic program guide)?. Looking
at the Argos website the one they do now, DTR500, does. If so, you
should have a timer function built into the box - look at the EPG
press a button on your remote and that should set it up as a timed
recording. All you then have to do is configure your DVD recorder to
accept a "record now" signal from the STB. Should all be do-able.

Tip top, using Crystal Palace. Had the aerial replaced 3 years ago
(squirrels had eaten the co-ax). If your aerial is getting on a bit,
it may be worth replacing it, or at least the co-ax, as this tends to
degrade over time, getting water in, which degrades the signal no end.
If you do get new co-ax, get CT100 grade (double screened) with no
joins in it.

certainly wouldn't describe mine as tip-top, even when I run a single
coax all the way down from the aerial (televes 45 from TLC in Crawley)
to the box; it doesn't seem to like going through connectors. I
replaced the coax from the aerial to the loft where it joins the
existing feed, using new from here on made no diff; is there a way of
joing coax together withour loss inducing plugs?

According to the Freeview web-site we're in the wrong area.
According to the aerial rigger there is a very good digital signal strength,
he should know he checked with his metro-gnome or geiger counter or
somesuch.He wasn't over complementary about the bugdet price co-ax I've used
from the splitter/amp though :-)

Because of the confusion I'm considering buying a cheapo for now, should at
least compliment the co-ax.

My Philips was only 69.99 (matches TV and dvd but probably a cheapo as
well)
AIUI they only advertise areas as being freeview-able once they reach a
certain strength signal, also apparently Ch5 is not available on
terrestrial S of Crystal Palace as it interferes with a French station
(??? I thought they were still SECAM, though along the northern coast
they all have dual standard so they can pick up UK tv)
