Hope it stays that way. My day of being an impromptu member of Lochaber
MRT a few years ago consisted of several hours getting cold doing what
we could to make avalanche victims comfortable while we waited for
stretchers and chopper, followed by several hours bloody hard graft
getting the victims off the slope, followed by walking off Craeg Smeggy
when I was completely exhausted. Help was needed so I gave it, but it's
not something I'd go out of my way to repeat!

So 'Nuff Respect to those that do it, and coins in the tins, but not
something I want to be doing myself.

The TV news said he was going to do mountain rescue while working for a
bank in London. Interesting to speculate how late he'll be on the first

There is a SE Cave Rescue Team. Primarily seems to exist so some chaps
can drive around the area in a Landy with Cave Rescue written on it. I
think the nearest they ever come to emergencies are their simulated
emergency drills, which take far longer than planned and people [censored]
getting very cold!

You should see some of the walks in my office. Some involve clambering
over the rooves on fire escapes, though officially you are supposed to
go up and down rather than up across and down, but who is going to
climb up eight floors by the stairs if you don't have to? Not for the
faint hearted when it is blowing a hoolie and icy to boot!

It's some time since I did those walks. There are others in the same
area where posties going onto the roof to take a short-cut caused a
security scare at Chelsea Barracks. There is also a walk that involves
Laxford, Kylestrome, (Ben) Stack and Lochmore.

OK - spill the beans. Which area would I have to have a mishap in to be
eligible for your services?

Cadair Idris... The Arans... Plynlummon range... More south than the South
Snowdonia MRT. I will be a trainee for the next howeverlong until I am
deemed good enough for full team membership. No pretentions of skill or
anything yet I have loads and loads to learn. Looking forward to it though.

Prince William plans to help with a Mountain Rescue Team (probably near
Balmoral) because he is amazed at what they volunteer to do and wants to see
how they do it. My only doubt is of idiots deliberately hurting themselves
in the hope that PW will rescue them.
He will also spend some time working in a finance firm in the City to help
him understand how fundraising for charities works and how the money can be
managed.
Finally he will spend time working on a farm to see where the food comes
from and the pressures placed on modern farmers and estate managers.

When all that is done he'll probably join the Army via Sandhurst so he can
look veterans in the eye at the Cenotaph and other memorial services. It'll
give him a much wider outlook on working life than just going straight from
uni into the army or the family business.
