Anyone been having trouble with Performance Brand tubes failing at the
valve stem? My buddy has had at least 4 of them recently that have
failed right at the base of the stem. We checked the hole in the rim
for sharp edges, but didn't find any problem.

One other possibility. I had a pair of Hutchinson tires a couple of years
ago that caused tube failures adjacent to the stem. The tire's bead area was
so large that the tube by the valve was suspended between the two beads and
could not seat against the bottom of the rim. Over time the tube would fail
at the unsupported area that was next to the valve.I have also had runs of defective tubes from Salsa and Continental where the
tubes would fail at a weak seam in the tube. Solution was to give up on
light weight road tubes and go to Blackburn generic standard weight. A
little heavier, but they never fail with out outside intervention.

Yep,
I purchased some Lunar Lights and the tire failed in that manner.
Switched over to Michelins and have not had a problem since. Don't
know if it was a design flaw or a manufcture problem.Claude

are not worth the risk.Matt O.

file the hole from the inside. work on it. its an acquired skill.
often, the barbs cannot be seen. -

i use nashbars that may be performance tubes and have no problems. the
problems came with burrs on the hole's edges and from vandals with
pliers. -
I've tried Performance ultralite road tubes and they're terrible.
Numerous failures at the base of the stem, spontaneous pinhole leaks
not related to punctures, etc.By contrast, Kenda's equally inexpensive ultralite road tubes (also
sold under the Salsa brand name) are superb. -

Anyone been having trouble with Performance Brand tubes failing at the
valve stem?No but my current batch of 2.25" MTB tubes is so old that it probably doesn't
mean much - bad batches and all that.Only negative I seen w/Performance tubes is that so many of them have such long
valve stems. Probably not a physical problem - just looks kind of weird.

PeteCresswell -
I got 3 luna light 700c tubes and 2 of the 3 were bad. The tubes got holes
or splits in them and I never even rode them. I installed them by hand
carefully and overnight in the garage the tire went flat. I am bringing them
back for a refund this weekend.cel

Yeah, they told me to bring them back for a refund too, but they are in
the trash. They did seem surprised when I told them that I think that
they have a quality problem.
These are the light weight road tubes, BTW. -

PeteCresswellLong valve stems MIGHT be part of the problem if you don't have deep
wheels. So much of the valve stem protrudes from the wheel that it
makes a pretty long lever that you attach the pump to. If you use a
hand pump, the rocking back and forth might weaken an already poorly
joined valve stem. -

Paradoxically, shouldn't a longer valve stem reduce any
rocking, not increase it?The stem itself offers scarcely any sideways resistance to
the kind of forces involved in holding the end of a pump
attached to the valve and shoving on the handle. What matters is how far the pump end, braced against a knee
or the ground (or perhaps just the governor of California's
mighty left hand), jolts when the rider pumps.A short valve should magnify the rocking, while a long valve
should reduce it. The diagrams below show a short and a long
valve. Imagine the top of each valve mmoving the same
distance sideways toward my knee as I pump:x = tops of both valves
y = same sideways jolt --> on pump stroke

__|_ _|_If valves are 3 and 6 units high, the same sideways movement
from x to y (equal to 1) rocks the short 3-unit-high valve
about 19.5 degrees, but rocks the tall 6-unit-high valve
only about 9.6 degrees.Whatever's causing the tubes to fail, I doubt that it's the
length of the valves.Carl Fogel

either by getting it on the rim strip during a wheel build, or
(possibly) by it being dripped from the chain. If this is the case,
you'd probably notice a residue on the rim.Mark Hickey

Home of the $695 ti frameNo chance of getting oil on it. He does deflate the tires after each
ride. Maybe the deflate-inflate cycles cause it to weaken. -
Yes; the ones I had were made by Kenda, who doesn't seem to
be able to perfect the stem/tube juncture, no matter what
label they are sold under.Ken

Specialized. Probably made in the same factory. Others have reported a
similar rash of stem failures. I'm sure it was some flaw in the
manufacturing process in some big Asian plant.
