RR/KR: Hot Ride - Cool Float

    Saturday, June 25 and time for the Fair Hills NRMA Poker Run. It's an
    event held by the Delaware Trail Spinners to raise money for this huge
    tract of land with an incredible amount of singletrack. It's a hot one
    today as the temps near 95F. There are several options, with the long
    one being 24 miles. I already have it in my head, that I don't think
    I'll be able to go that distance. The heat just sucks the energy out of
    me. I load up the gear and take just this one photo at the reg area.

    I needed to save as much weight as possible, so the camera was a luxury
    item I left behind. Water was more important as in the past week, there
    have been two local biking incidents (one death) related to the heat.

    It's hot and getting hotter as we peddle through all of the great trails
    like Drunken Sailer and Crack Head Bob. We even get to sample some of
    the new stuff recently cut for the race in a few weeks, which the Poker
    Run course follows. The heat finally get's me and I call it at 18
    miles. For all the pain and heat, I get a lousy pair of fours which
    nets me no prize.

    Sunday was supposed to be a trip to Allamuchy to train for the 24 hour
    race. With the temps remaining high and the added bonus of more
    humidity, we cancel the ride and turn to the water instead. John
    Tannock, his wife, and friend join me for some Pine Barrons kayaking on
    the Batsto River. Get shuttle up river for a three hour tour. The
    water is beautiful and the scenery is too.

    All along the river and throughout the Pinelands are some terrific old
    structures, foundations, and history. The area today is used for
    raising Cranberries, but prior to that it was used to mine bog iron.
    Remnants of the past are every as is this old bridge foundation probably
    dating back to the late 1700's.

    Heading down the river we come across this shell of a rather large boat.
    It's obviously very big to have been floating down this three foot
    deep river. Maybe a storm dragged it down?

    Ok, so it's not mountain biking but it sure beat the heat and I finally
    got the kayak out of lakes and onto a river.

    I have a spot or two on my team if your interested. We can be a 5
    person if Carla is interested. It's a fun thing, although I hope to
    place in the top 12 after finishing 24th last year (my other teammates
    bailed on me after two laps).

    Glad y'all made it down. Thanks for the support. I was starting to wonder
    what happened to you guys. I saw you (Mitch) in the lot around 8:00, but
    you guys did not pass my checkpoint until really late. Thought maybe you
    had an accident or major damage.

    I'll take that as your excuse for not saying hi ;-) Too bad you missed that
    4 mile (well, 3.39 to be exact) loop through South Park, it's really nice.
