Dancing might be the last thing on the minds of the Canberra
participants in the Australian Unicycle Championships in Darwin right
now - but it's something they should address. The last two members of
the ACT contingent, Dale Newbery, 19, of Hall, and Nic Vevers, 18, of
O'Connor, arrived in the Northern Territory at midnight on Monday to
join Canberra doctor Rod Lambert and his teenage son Tom, of Lyneham.
Dale and Nic each took two unicycles with them to Darwin: freestyle
bikes and more rugged extreme bikes for the mountain events. But the
question is: which is the best model for dancing? You see, although the
actual championships are on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, there
is a dinner scheduled for Saturday night at the Marrara Indoor Stadium.
''You are encouraged to bring your unicycle and participate in
unicycling activities through the evening,'' UniNats 2005 web site says
at www.unicyclingnt.com/html/ program.html.
''We will have the biggest dance floor ever, therefore, if you wish to
dance with or without your unicycle, you are most welcome.'' About 100
unicyclists will compete in the championships. This is the third one -
the first two were in Canberra. Categories of events include track and
field, team sports such as basketball and hockey, trials, artistic,
mountain unicycling and Open X. :MUNCH MYSTERY : Norwegian
expressionalist artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944) painted several versions
of his famous The Scream painting but it's unlikely he popped over to
Canberra to carve a Scream-like figure from a stump on one of our
reserves. Yet that's the image that confronted a surprised walker in Red
Hill recently. We are working on getting a photo of it. In the meantime,
we'd love to know who carved it and why. :TAKE HEART, OFFAL EATERS :
Peter wanted to know on Monday if there was an offal-eating group in
Canberra. This followed an item in CC last week from a Canberra woman
who came across a tripe- eating club in Western Australia. Well, I had
an e-mail yesterday from Noel to say he was a member of a group that
meets at a local golf club where the chef cooks offal just for them by
arrangement.
