Anti Midge cream - Does Avon work ? / What works better ?!

Break a bit of elderberry branch off complete with leaves and hang it from
your hat.
Works for horses.

Avon Skin So Soft is the name you are looking for. Me personally, I much
prefer pure cintronella oil, has a far more apealling aroma.

Believe it or not but it is only female midges that actually bite. They
need the blood to give birth !
So if you can keep away from the females you'll be OK :-)
In truth I've never found anything that keeps them away, they can get
through thick clothing etc.
At present they seem to be in great profusion and biting freely.
I sometimes carry a tin of fly spray and 'zap' them when I see a little
clouds worth. Doesn't stop them biting but you get the satisfaction of
knowing that its the last meal they will ever have.

My homeopath gave it to me to scare off cloths
moths (I still cant decide how well that one
works - not brilliant certainly)

But moths being insects too, surely worth a try.

OK, I'll try Avon Forest Fresh or Skin so Soft
but it clearly depends on my body chemistry.

I wonder if diet makes much difference.
e.g. Eating garlic.

Good for scaring off female humans
if nothing else... !

reasons that the British Bat population is not 30% of what it was 40 years
ago !

I shalln't get too much into it all, suffice to say that in the 10 years I've
had a licence & have been doing surveys etc. Even I've noticed the
population/numbers increasing 🙂 - Lack of spraying/increase of set
aside/planting of woodland/education of the general public to allay fears of
old wives tales etc all have helped massively...

from there you'll find a few links to other sites too...

I recall seeing on TV many years ago that someone in Scotland had done a lot
of work with one of the naturally growing herbs up there, - I've got a
terrible memory so can't recall what it was called, - & that was the most
effective deterrent to Midges ! As has been said many times here, I believe
that it's the female of the species that does all the damage, & there's a
particular chemical of human body odor that she senses... There's a lot of
work going on to find a spray that disguises this... we shall see... nature's
very clever though & will diversify very quickly to get round anything we can
throw at it !!

The "chemical" that attracts mosquitoes is carbon dioxide from your
breathing. The manufacturers of mosquito traps and "zappers" recognize this
fact and include a CO2 source in their more effective models. It's unlikely
that your exhaled CO2 is ever going to be disguised by a spray, though.

How can we increase the Pipestrelle's ?

Live in an older house that provides plenty of dry space for them to
roost. We have a fairly decent colony ( few hundred ) living under our
roof.

Or put up some bat boxes in suitable locations and you may get lucky.

If you don't like being bitten and can stand smelling like a brewery,
then yeast tablets seem to put biting insects off provided there is
someone else available for them to feed on. Otherwise DEET is about as
good as anything.

I shall definitely take some (non toxic to humans) Pryrethrum
tincture up to Scotland them. And I'll try mixing it in with my
Avon Skin-So-Soft that I just bought!

Pyrethroids ARE toxic to humans. Each year thousands of peole suffer from
being poisoned by pyrethroids. Search for pyrethroid and mcs!
