i always wonder why peterB doesn't ever bother reporting this poster to
    his/her ISP?

I only complain when he pretends to be me. He can say what he likes if
he is using someone else's name. I have had a couple of
"peterbowditch" and "gebesse" accounts closed, but most ISPs
    (including Sympatico) don't care.

do you suppose that peterB in some way enjoys some part of it???

    <irony mode> There's nothing I like more than someone saying I abuse
my children. </irony mode> Why I put up with it is because it exposes
the truth about someone who is considered to be an expert in the
treatment of cancer. I don't have to say anything - he does it for me.

i find the whole thing utterly scary and if i were peterB i certainly would
have stopped using my real name and personal info online as soon as a psycho
like this appeared and started stalking.

Too late then. In any case, I can only get credibility by being a real
person. Using a pseudonym in newsgroups and mailing lists is one thing
(and perfectly acceptable if the same persona is maintained over
time), but it doesn't work with web sites or on TV or radio. My cover
would be blown the first time I spoke in public.

why DO people open themselves up for this sort of usenet torment anyway??

To quote Sir Edmund Hillary: "Because it's there".

If I make an error and I can correct it, I will.

That quote actually came from George Mallory when he was asked in 1923
why he wanted to climb Mount Everest. He died in an attempt on the
mountain the following year. His body was found in 1999, 75 years
    later.
