Rise in Swedish skin cancers tied to tanning
Swedes have been doing too much tanning and are paying
for it, researchers said on Monday.
A dramatic increase of squamous cell carcinomas,
especially on areas of the body normally covered by
clothing, suggested too many Swedes were intentionally
exposing themselves to the sun for too long, said the
study by doctors at the Karolinska Institute in Huddinge.
The study, led by Kari Hemminki and published in the
journal Archives of Dermatology, reviewed more than 50
000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma - the second most
common type of skin cancer after basal cell carcinoma -
between 1961 and 1998.
Chronic exposure to sunlight is the most common cause of
squamous cell and other skin cancers, which can penetrate
to underlying tissues and ultimately prove deadly if
untreated.
A recent survey quoted by the study found half of Swedes
had had a sunburn within the past year, a similar
proportion had travelled to a sunny resort, and more than
one-third of the women questioned said they regularly
used a tanning bed.
