  1. There are over 240 different species of Aloe, growing mainly in the dry
regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and America.

Although Aloe vera is a member of the Lily family, it is very cactus-like in
its characteristics. This unique plant also belongs to a larger plant family
    called "Xeroids".

Of the 240+ species of Aloe, four are recognized as having nutritional value
with Aloe barbadensis miller leading the group. Aloe barbadensis miller is
the type of Aloe used in most products with aloe content available
    commercially today.

The aloe leaf contains over 75 nutrients and 200 active compounds, including
20 minerals, 18 amino acids, and 12 vitamins.

It's also a powerful digestive-tract irritant that will
have you racing to the toilet. As a result, the GI
system doesn't absorb any of those nutrients (which
are only present in miniscule amounts). The primary
effect of aloe vera ingestion is loss of water and
    electrolytes.

And, unlike Dave, I grow the stuff and use it liberally
for medicinal purposes. I just know better than to
    take it internally.

You should acquaint yourself with some of the other 239
varieties that are for internal use. I think that I have mentioned
before that plants provide food and nutrition to those of us who
know which ones to eat. I have also remarked on traditional
views being very narrow in perspective. You prove my case.

    Dave -
You praised Aloe barbadensis for its nutritional qualities.
When confronted with the purgative qualities of that species, you
waffle and sidestep and try to change the subject.

How much Aloe barbadensis doi you have to take to get
significant nutritional value (let's say more than a serviing
ordinary green beans) ... and is this more or less than the dose
required to cause the purgative effect.

You are making some false assumptions that you would like to be true
to justify your negative attitude. Your attitude has no justification.

You are making some false assumptions that you would like to be true
to justify your negative attitude. Your attitude has no justification.

You are doing it again, Dave. You accuse "false assumptions" without stating
what those assumptions are or why you believe them to be false. Then you
condescendingly chastise a "negative attitude" that simply is not there in
    Dr. Nimh's straightforward question.

So show just a little honesty and integrity, Dave, and answer the question,

"How much Aloe barbadensis do you have to take to get significant
nutritional value (let's say more than a serviing of ordinary green beans)
.... and is this more or less than the dose required to cause the purgative
    effect?"

Do you deny that eating Aloe has a laxitive effect? Can you share any
knowledge of the nutrient content of Aloe? If not, it is YOUR assumptions
that are suspect, and you have no right to be sneering about anyone else's
"attitude." Put up, or shut up.
