(after being one of the "old school" ward trained) and a further 3yrs to
her Grad Dip in Health Promotion. Add to that, 12 yrs "hands on" nursing
and I guess I'd be safer not introducing her to this thread ;-)

For her sake (and yours), I'd tend to agree. On the other hand, from a
strictly selfish point of view, I think it'd be most entertaining to see
what she had to say about "toolz's" comments. ;-)

I speculate that one thing she would have to say is that rather than kissing
doctors' asses, nurses are in the business of saving doctors' asses. The
alties here are fond of pointing out the prevalence of medical errors. Well,
most of the prescribing and ordering errors made by doctors are caught and
corrected by nurses before they can harm a patient. Also, nurses are the
first line of patient advocacy, and have been known to stand between the
doctor and the patient to prevent unethical or otherwise improper action on
the part of a physician.

Nurses are not meek little maids who act only at the whim of the doctors. In
addition to carrying out the doctor's plan of care as described in the
"orders," they are the information gathering agency for the doctor,
providing an ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of that plan. In
addition, they have a separate practice. Each patient is evaluated by the
nurses and "nursing diagnoses" are identified, and a "nursing care plan" is
prepared as a guide to the patient's care. Discharge planning begins the day
the patient is admitted, and has been demonstrated to reduce hospital
lengths of stay, and promote better outcomes. Doctors have nothing to do
with these processes.

A nurse's education includes courses in chemistry, organic chemistry,
anatomy and physiology, psychology, human growth and development, sociology,
microbiology, and pharmacology, in addition to all the courses in nursing
including basic nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing, nursing the
elderly, surgical nursing, etc. Nursing specialists get courses in their
specialties along with long term on-the-job training. Add to that the long
experience of many nurses, and you have a cadre of VERY knowledgeable people
who have no lack of self esteem, nor any resentment of doctors. [Well, maybe
there's a LITTLE resentment that the doctors always get the best parking
places. ;o)]

You are way off base, toolz. I hope you've learned not to look down your
nose at nurses by that time some day when you find one inserting a foley
catheter.

(after being one of the "old school" ward trained) and a further 3yrs to
her Grad Dip in Health Promotion. Add to that, 12 yrs "hands on" nursing
and I guess I'd be safer not introducing her to this thread ;-)

people...running a multitude of monitoring machines,,,managing 5-7 IV lines
running at the same time...initiating cpr...performing defibrillation...etc etc

Nurses are the backbone esp of the hospital...just be admitted truly sick or
recovering from a trauma or major surgery...and you will get an accurate
picture

WHEN I became a nurse in the early 60's times WERE different.....but even then
most docs treated us with utmost respect ,,,considering nurses the most
important members of the health care team....we were at the bedside 24 hours a
day...docs visited for maybe a few minutes..

new car "wobble"...so he took it to the dealership....they "check it

a few days later I am driving down a freeway packed with 18 wheelers....going

all of a sudden the right front wheel FALLS off.....I skid across 4 lanes of
potentially lethal traffic...as the car is ON THE wheel rotor...they aren't
round!!!

now...when the insurance company checks it out...with the dealer who so called
"checked it out"...they admitted they didn't.....near fatal outcome

hmmmm....do I call ALL mechanics imbeciles?? course not...we just happened
to find one that was..

so you know ONE np who is less than competent...I know some too....also docs
that shouldn't be practicising..
