I am a regular attendee at the Hotter than Hell Hundred mile bicycle
ride, thelast weekend in August. I have ridden 13 times, finishing 11.
My 60th birthday was in September.
I really, really, from the bottom of my heart, thank all the medical
volunteers for their services. Those that I have spoken too seem to
enjoy volunteering. I urge you to try it, it will be interesting to see
what people will do in the name of fun.
I would volunteer if my skill would be of service.
I have to admit that psychiatric care would be useful to some.
I have a strong desire to go the Ironman, but I can no longer run after
a knee and ankle surgery, so all that is left is bicycling.
BTW, I enjoy your comments, that is prior to this one.
Jerry
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone, and I was kidding...but only partly.
Everybody with half an ounce of sense knows that regular exercise is
important to good health. But like vitamin A, carbohydrates, and sleep,
enough is good, too much is unhealthy. The IronMan participants are ALL
dangerously dehydrated by the end of the day and several hundred of them
every year are seriously ill. A few suffer permanent disability, and there
have been deaths. A few years ago one of the top contenders nearly died from
an infarcted intestine. (When the body is exercising near its limits the
blood supply is shunted from the internal organs to the heart and skeletal
muscles. This is a good thing if you are running from a bear, but if it
continues for hours, tissue damage can result.)
As far as volunteering for the med tent goes, I'll pass. I do my part by
working a long shift every IronMan day so that those who like to volunteer
can get the day off.
On the whole, I have more patience with obese couch potatoes than with the
OCD driven IronMen. At least the fatties don't strut that superior "fitter
than thou" attitude.
By the way, there's a rumor that the IronMan may be moved out of Hawaii in
2005 or 2006.
