I think you're getting a little too agitated over this. It's amazing
how some people get a handful of postal junk mail every day, and
sheepishly dump it in the trash. Those same people, get email offering
the same thing and they react like someone just gave them the finger
in traffic, broke their windshield, and drove away.

In America, we receive enough 3rd class postal mail to fill both
buildings of the World Trade Center three and a half times each year. (If
they were still there!)
The U.S. government spends 320 million dollars a year to dispose of junk
mail waste.

It costs the same to send email as it does to receive it. That old
argument that it "shifts costs to the recipient" is a load of [censored].
They are talking like bulk emailers get free InterNet access. If you
used some persons account to dial in and send each email to them, then
the whole cost would be theirs, but that's not the way it happens, the
sender has an account also that they pay for.

Would the anti-spammers accept it if it was metered like postal mail,
and they got $2 off their InterNet bill each month to accept it? No
way. It's not about cost, it's about control. The net-nazi types want
control over what is sent and received on the InterNet. The few have
become so polarized on this, they are almost angry to the point of
madness.

Another thing that gets me is when people have an "expectation of
privacy" in a worldwide public forum like the InterNet. Your postal
address is sold or traded several times a day on average, that's why
you get so much junk mail in your postal mailbox. To expect that, on
the InterNet, everything should be different, that it should be a
Utopian place, free of advertising or solicitation, is insanity. The
InterNet is a reflection of the "real world". You get mail both
places, some will be unsolicited advertisements just like your postal
mail box.

I think it's time to break out of your dream-world where nobody should
use the InterNet to make a living. Now of course, I'm on your side
where it comes to the illegal pyramid schemes and adult sex sites blasting
email out to a bulk list. They have become the lightning rod for the
industry, there is no denying that.

The point is, bulk email is too powerful to be ignored. Small
businesses are at an all-time high, and most startups don't have the
average $13,500 it costs to send out 100,000 post cards with a sales
offer on it. They will however, invest a few hundred dollars in
software, and an InterNet connection. In this case, the genie is out
of the bottle, and will not be put back in.

Every message in every newsgroup is an unsolicited e-mail by definition. You
did not request the author of the message to send to you via the newsgroup
therefore every message meets your "daffy nition" (sic) of "Spam".
Newsgroups are open & public & free, you choose to select and participate in
them. If you don't like them, their content or the commercial content go
elsewhere.

Get off the 'net and it won't bother you.
Set some filters to block messages you don't want.
Set some filters to block key words in messages you don't want.
You have control of what you receive. Don't cry about getting things you
might not like. E-mail is growing as a communication means.
If you don't like beer stay out of bars... Nobody forces you to go to
certain newsgroups !
Shoot the mailman too.... he brings real paper junk to your door. He is
endorsing the killing of trees and the depletion of the ozone layer by the
destruction of trees and the rape of the land by the clear cutting practices
of lumber companies to provide the paper to bring real physical junk mail to
your door. Shoot him today.
Read the title of an e-mail if it seems like junk to you don't read it and
you only involve a few electrons that will dissipate into heat for your
house in the Winter.

It's been estimated that something like half of the emails sent on a
given day are now spam. People waste a great deal of time dumping
hundreds of spammed emails; the national cost to productivity is

Many of them almost do -- especially the ones who grab unprotected
email servers and use them to send spam. The cost to any spammer is
quite low and is not typically a function of the amount they send.

But I can contact the Direct Marketing Association and get off most
junk mail lists. Can't do that with email.
