banged it around, cussed at it, tried pulling, prying, and pleading with it.

I'd really like to get this thing apart so I can clean it well. And I'd like
to use it, so suggestions requiring hacksaws, drills, or explosives, while
fun, will probably not be a good options.

Anybody got any ideas?

After getting off lube the shaft. You have two choices, WD-40 or K-Y
Jelly.

But seriously, all yoose food processor addicts (who are obviously
incapable of using a knife), get yourself a tube of food grade silicone
grease (same as used with meat grinders)... a wee dab on the drive
shaft will not only prevent sticking but will prevent the drive shaft
from damaging the interior of your blade spindles... pulsing is
especially harmful, would you drive your automobile so recklessly.

I agree about the slicing part; I pretty much use it for grinding/pureeing,
which is a little time consuming with a knife :-)

Seriously, though, the blade isn't tight at all, normally. This is a vacuum
issue, and I don't know if a dab of grease is going to make a difference.
I'll give it a try, and see what happens. If I ever get it un-stuck -- it's
still glued on. But considering this is a problem that happens maybe once or
twice a year (and usually it resolves itself) and I use the stupid thing
every day, it's not like this is an ongoing problem. But right now it's
getting irritating.

On the other hand, I've had the thing since the early - mid eighties, so
it's not like I haven't gotten my use out of it. I'd run out and buy a new
one right now, but I have a notion that overall, this one's probably built
better than what's sold today.

Sounds more like you got some schmutz jammed up inside the blade
spindle hole, probably blocking the vent hole. Warming it *gently*
with a hair dryer will very likely expand the plastic enough to release
the hold... but then be careful to work more cleanly. And if you do
decide to use silicone grease use very little, barely coat the spindle
surface with the slightest film, do NOT jam grease inside the blade
spindle otherwise schmutz will stick to it and you'll be back to the
vacuum problem.

Mine bit the dust in a similar way. It's a shame, because everyting
was working fine, but the one day the shaft housing came off with the
blade. The cost of fixing it would have been almost as much as buying
new, so I figured it had seen better days, threw it away and got a
bigger one.

CostCo has decent prices on them when they're available.

Oh, I know exactly what I did wrong...it was a multistep process. And I
doubt I'll be having one of those kinds of days again any time soon.

I tried hot water; no dice. I'll see if I've got a working hair dryer
hereabouts. Something tells me the heat gun would be a bad idea. Then again,
it might be more fun.

There's not a chance I'd fix this thing if it really broke. Right now it
works fine except that I can't get the blade out. I'll do some shopping; I
have no idea what the newer ones are like since I've had this one for
probably 20 years. At least now I know what I need it for, so I won't be
looking at stupid add-ons that I'll never use.
