1. I am a runner in San Francisco, CA who was frustrated by trying to determine exact route distances. I found driving them to be tedious, time consuming, and less than accurate, especially when I wanted to run on trails, through parks, and down one-way streets where cars cannot go.

So, I got together with another runner-friend of mine and created a FREE online application called Route Ruler, which allows athletes to draw their own routes on downloaded maps and gives them exact distances. As far as we know this is the only free service of its kind, and it eliminates the need for buying costly GPS gadgets.

We are still fine-tuning some of the features and look of the site, but we do have a website up at www.RouteRuler.com , and want you to take a look at it. We feel it could turn out to be a great training tool for Cyclicts as well. We have been live for 2 months now and have 1200 members and average 6900 hits a day.

We wanted to see if you would give it a try and send us any comments you might have. We will be constantly improving the look and usability of Route Ruler through the coming months.

I hope you like it, and I look forward to any comments you may send.

  2. It looks great, however there's one thing I suggest. You should try to make it possible for the route to follow a very curvy path automatically by just clicking on both ends of the path. I think this can be achieved by marking the paths' colour and identify them from the rest of the markings on the map.

The roads I'm refering to are like these in the pic.

  3. HMMMM.... Interesting. Let em see what ewe cna do. We already have the function that allows you to trace freehand (in a curvy line) by holding down the left-click button and drawing. Is that what you were talking about?

  4. yes I noticed that but if the route is all curvy (even the main roads!) it gets very inacurate in the end. Take a look at the map I attached and you'll know what I'm talking about🙂

  5. hmmmmmmmmmmm. interesting. I see what you are saying now. Let me talk to my partner who is doing the programming on this and see what he can come up with. One thing you can do is going ingot the Settings section of the application and turn the cursor speed down. This allows for more accurate drawing on curvy roads... especially fo rthe more shaky amongst us... But your idea is great, let me see if there is a way to do it.

    thanks for your comments.
