Hi all, I hope to be Cycling the Grand canal From Dublin to Shannon Harbour.Its around 260k round trip. I have 2 weeks off soon and was thinking of doing it. (For all you funny folk out there. Along side the canal and not on it.)Got a Specialized hardrock mountain bike.I do 30k each week day and a 70k run Saturday and Sunday. Been doing this the last few months.Just wondering how many days should i allow for the trip. Bear in mind Im not 100% fit. Been doing the 30k a day for 4 months. I was planning on a 3 day run. Any hits or tips. Any here done the run, ? Or are interested

I found your query from 4 yrs ago on this forum. I was recently thinking of doing the same trip myself. Did you ever do it? If so, how did you find it?

I have ridden from Allenwood to Edenderry a few times its got a very interesting overview of the bog as you approach the "Tunnel" aquaduct on the Edenderry to Rathangan Rd. You get a great sense of the massive engineering feat involved. I also covered the section from Edenderry to Rhode and on to daingean last Nov in foul weather. It was a splendid autumn wilderness along the edge of the bog with lovely shdes on the trees.
This year I went on one of the few scorchers of the summer from Rahan churches outside Tullamore to Ferbane.....some tarmac and some fairly rickety grass paths which had been traversed by a caterpiller wheeled vehicle. The trip through Poolagh got my mind wondering was I in some prairie village hard to believe it was 15 mins from Tullamore or athlone!!! Well worth it..
I love these remote parts. You dont have to be in the Glen of Imaal / Connemara etc to feel the wild spirit of Ireland. the canals are the hidden gem for a bit of a mtb spin.
