Why don't they just run the women's after the men's (TDFF '06-onward)?

The problems have been going on for years now, much of them being
due to a bizarre situation in which the person who runs the race
doesn't own the race dates, and the people who do dislike him
intensely. The last I heard of it, the guy was planning to
hold the race, but completely outside France. There must have been
some pretty awesome incompetence because 4 years ago, the supermarket
chain Monoprix was doing a good job supporting the race.

Too much organization, too many road closure, local police wouldn't
like it, local towns wouldn't want more dissruptions/couldn't afford to
pay the fee of having the tour etc. it's just too much.

However your topic is a good one. Why isn't there more done for Women.
Something is wrong. The women work really hard, race hard, train hard
and race fast. Most of the women could beat everyone's ass here (even
though that claim they are Div3 pros)... saying the racing is slower
etc (although a little true) doesn't really hold water for me. Can you
really notice the different of 2 or 3 kph from the side of the road.

RE: the tour is was going to be a European type tour, but again has
fallen through. It's a real shame they can't get it going. European
women's racing is hurting big time.
If there are any women racers on this forum thing: "keep racing, keep
at it, there ARE people out there who care, we know it is hard, unfair
and a bit of a mess at times, but please don't get demoralized."

Boyd, do you have any idea at all how much it costs to put on a major
road race?

Run the women's race concurrent with the men's Tour de France and over
the same roads? Are you aware that the organizer has to find rooms and
other facilities for the teams? Are you aware that even the Tour de
France often has to bus the teams many miles to get them to anything
that resembles reasonable facilities? Are you aware that the smaller
teams get absolutely attocious accomodations because of this? Why do
you suppose you hear of a large proportion of riders coming down with
"digestive ailments"?

Exactly where would they now get the space for 50% more people?

The ASO/Societe de TdF doesn't organize the Grande Boucle, or Grande
Route or whatever it was going to be called this year. That is why
it's called La Grande Boucle instead of TdFF - because ASO has the
rights to the name "Tour de France." As for why the SdTdF or other
big Euro race promoters don't do much to organize racing for women,
I don't know. Probably money, but it is still disappointing.

Doesn't ASO lose money on every race they run, except for the Tour? I seem
to remember reading that.

It doesn't seem that far-fetched. Paris-Nice was almost folding a couple
of years ago until ASO stepped in. They need the other races to keep
cycling interest (and the riders) going, and they use them for
strengthening the TdF image (the jerseys, the announcer, Hinault on
stage).
