1 yr old 2002 Record BB on a Colnago C-40 w/6000 miles, some of them very wet. I believe the BB shell in the frame is titanium. I have noticed slight play in the spindle of the BB when grasping both cranks and rocking them side to side. It seems to be a little worse over the past few weeks but no grinding or binding, funny noises etc. I don't notice it while pedaling, either. Pulled the BB and opened the "seal" on the non-drive side cartridge bearings and it looked pretty muddy/rusty in there. cleaned it as best I could, regreased and put the seal back on, reinstalled the BB to torque spec. No change.
I assume the BB is probably failing due to wet riding, etc. No? Is it safe to keep riding on it for a while, or replace the BB immediately?
Low end campy bb's can be obtained for as little as £8. Why not switch one of these in and see if it cures your problem. My centuar bb needed replacing after 18 mths - I couldn't beleive it was that having heard how durable this stuff was. I (LBS) put a veloce in and it was !

Greg I had the same setup as you. When my cranks developed lateral play it turned out that the bearings in the Record BB had rusted and that they were slowing being grinded down. When I took the BB out of the bike it came out dismembered and rusted out looking like a turd. Do yourself a favor and buy a Phil Wood BB. It puts the Record BB to shame.

I would ensure that the frameset BB shell is faced before you slam any BB. We see a lot of BBs go south prematurely, many from unfaced BB shells..even C-40s...
Thanks Peter. It *looked* as if it had been faced and I confirmed w/the shop today that they did it when prepping the bike. Used the Campy tool set to face/chase. Apparently they keep some sort of check sheet on file for each bike and could look back to see. My guess is that the BB just got ruined from riding in the rain--it's been a wet year here. Still, I have an ultegra BB with 10K miles and counting....
