  1. Hey Peeps,

I'm doin' the 'round the bay anti-clockwise. I'm looking for interested
riders to form a bunch who can aim for a reasonable avg speed somewhere
around = > 30 kmh <Food stops excluded> Probably want to "hit the road"
around the 0900hrs mark. If anyone's interested please reply or contact
me direct at ipogster<at> gmail.com to hammer out the fine details.

    Regards Graeme.

9AM? Why so late? You're in for an almighty crush. Also how do you know he direction your're travelling or is this an "unofficial" ride?

  3. Errr.... Requested anti-clockwise ..ie Melb-Q'cliff, etc. I assume
that's what i'm dealt as i got confirmation of entry etc etc. Whats
wrong with 0900hrs? i figure it's gonna take 'round 7-8hrs at my
estimated avg less any down time. As a 1st time 'round the bay
participant i'm certainly open to advice regarding best time to start
and all that but figured 0900hrs to be a reasonable starting time
although i'm happy to start earlier if thats the accepted thing for
    "repeat offenders".

Well we would have done it in 8 and a half total last year if Ian hadnt
flatted twice.. And plenty of people have done it in sub 8 hours and
    some in sub 7

    Fast people.. very fast people

Search Google groups for experiences people had last year with the
waiting/delays for the ferry... JayWoo and I were lucky, we were early
missed the chaos by about 30mins-1hr.. 7-8hrs as 'ride time' is fine,
throw 3-4hrs waiting for a ferry, and it is a nightmare.. BV were going to
address the ferry issue, but the massive numbers mean there is only so much
    that can realistically be done.

If I was to do it again, I'd be either starting 30mins earlier than the
official start, or being at the front of the crowd and putting the hammer
    down for the first 100kms...

    my 2c,

    cheers,
    GPL

  10. Westgate bridge going west closes for cyclists reasonably early. Make sure
you don't miss that. Its times would be based on the 5:30 - 7:30 starts with
some leeway for travel from the start.

  11. I've done it the last four times with last year the fastest at 7 hrs 20 min saddle time. I started right at the West Gate Bridge waiting for the police to open up and let us start at 5.30am.

Even given all this and the pace we were riding there was still a considerable wait at the ferry (about 1 hour before boarding) and I understood it was absolute mayhem a little while later. That's why I would start as early as possible. Also keep in mind the Bridge will only be open for a given amount of time in that direction.

As for your ride preference unless you are a BV memeber your choice of direction is not guaranteed and I understand even membership may not be a guarantee any longer.

This event is rapidly getting out of hand IMHO. My first one 4 years ago had three and a half thousand. Now its over 8,000 with "mums and dads" also thrown in on top of that for the 50km and 100km version.

I don't know about anyone else but I felt the ride became somewhat dangerous last year coming home from Sorrento when encountering families on BMX's negotiationg the Nepean Hwy. I hope I'm not sounding like a snob. I don't mean to.

I think we should all do the Not Around the Bay in a Day Ride the Dutchman is organizing

    *whimper*

Combine that with the fiasco (IMO) that was last year's GVBR, and
there's very little chance I'll be throwing any more money BV's way.
They're too keen to take your money and put you on the ride, even when
that means that the experience for the group as a whole suffers.

    Never Again.

(Comments that were made last night about a certain high profile member
of BV's staff are beginning to sound more and more realistic. *sigh* And
to think that they could be doing so much better if they just pulled
their finger out and realised the problems inherent with the way they
seem to be doing things right now. Quality, not quantity ... but I can't
    see them heeding that message...)

  13. Doesn’t the entry fee cover the purchase of an extra ferry for the ‘Bay ride?

Nah, seriously the ferry wait can go on for ages. (done it 7 times previous, first in '96).
Ride time compared to (net) elapse time makes for entertaining viewing.

If the ‘Not the bay ride’ occurs on a different day, then me & a few tightarses will be just riding to Sorrento & back on that day. Being a public road I can’t see an issue with that.

I feel that cycling should never become a ‘user pays’ activity.

I'll be in if the "Not the bay ride" happens on a different day. I can't make it on the offical day.

  15. definetely want to factor in:

    bridge-opened times
Ferry waiting. i think they will be sanctioning thisa san olympic sport in time for London2012games 🙄
and one other little thing... WIND!!!

you can fairly reasonably expect the usual prevailing weather/rain/hail/gails to be coming from the SouthWest.
That means a spanking head wind on the Geelong Rd.
Even on a 'still' day, somehow Geelong Rd will have a headwind

It however is 'usually' calm before 8-9am
The 'usual' start time is 5:30am (isnt it?)

PS 2 years ago in the weather-debacle that was RTB-03 i did it clockwise and was able to average about 55kph ON MY OWN due to the spanking tailwind. The kind of tailwind you KNOW you will never get again and is to be held in and talked about in reverential tones, lest you destroy its existence for all time 😄

Oh, did i mention the ferry cockups? 🙄

On the official day, I'll be doing the ATB 🙂

Maybe the day after, I can do it ;P

apart from the cycling aspect, money raised does go to a good cause as well, im getting family members to sponsor me for the first time this year, as I have organised a small work team, so I get in a good ride and I hopefully get to benefit some people as well.

MOney only goes to a good cause if you get sponsordhip, which have mentioned that you are doing, the way they sell it you think that is part of where the entry money is going.

Did you really average 55kph for the whole trip?

Remind me never to ride with you. My greatest achievement in cycling was finishing ATB-03 with my sanity and my health. Any thought of a good time was washed away with the first hailstorms. From Werribee to Geelong was the worst conditions imaginable

Werribee to Geelong was bad, but later in the day, on the otherside of the bay, it was quite nice.
