i hated this show. among the finalists, they kicked out his girl cuz she refused to say she's the best.
she was supposed to say she's the best cuz the judges simply wanted to hear it. you have to sheepishly go along with judges' wishes to assert your confidence. talk about hypocritical contradiction.
i wonder if that chinese dude would ever say he's better than yan can cook guy.
the show was crass, american idol of cooking. shame on PBS. it was all yuppie power trip.

It's just like any other job interview.

Sad, but true... If you want the job, you have to be all enthusiastic and tell them exactly what they want to hear.

Yep. Her response was actually correct. There's no true best. Each one of them could be viewed as better than the other by different interviewers/chefs. Todd wants the best, eh? Well, it's up to him to decide what's best for him, but that doesn't mean it's best for the others.

what i hated was the dishonesty. todd didn't want that girl cuz she didn't have the iron personality to be chef. okay, fine. that's valid. but, to find some bogus excuse to boot her out. that's [censored]. the way i see it, she showed courage when she said she wasn't necessarily the best. actually, she was standing her ground more than the other two who simply said what they were SUPPOSED to say.
also, since when does a chef have to be a megalomaniacal and arrogant [censored]?
suppose one of the finalists asked todd if he's better than the chinese guy or vice versa. would they put eachother down?
and what about the third guy? the author. yeah, like he knows alot about food.
well, i'm glad todd ended up with that pig redneck hag cuz they deserve eachother.
I only caught part of a few episodes of Cooking Under Fire while channel-surfing. I found Todd english to be an insufferable and overweening bore and most of the contestants to be yammering sycophants.
I don't think I managed more than 3 minutes of the monumentally idiotic Hell's Kitchen - where borderline psychotic/chef Gordon Ramsey could probably do better with 500 mg. daily of clozapine than organic flat-leaf Italian parsley or an African Cast Iron Potjie.
Don't get me wrong, I've loved cooking since I was eight years old (I'm waaaayyyy past that) but I have grown weary of the quasi-rock-star status that cooks have attained on television. Give me Julie, and Jacque anyday.
