This is going to be the week that make or breaks me. Heatwaves in the UK, 32-35 degrees on the ride home.
*gulp*
Found this mornings commute slightly harder than Friday (combination of tiring weekend, monday morning blues and weather) but stuck at it and feel good for doing it.
I have decided to set up an Exc*l spreadsheet here at work to monitor my average speed etc. etc. over time to see if i AM actually getting any faster/fitter.
On the way home tonight im going to try riding with my new micro AM/FM radio on, hopefully the resounding sounds of The Thrills will push me onward!
Ill keep you posted on my progress (if any of you are actually interested!!). Sorry if these journals bore you but it helps keep my interest and once i get past the "can i REALLY be bothered to cycle to work" ill be fine - just need it to become second nature!

i start tomorrow night on way home
Wow, im spurring people on now!?
Tell you what, i think the decision to commute is the best thing I have done - im adamant that if i stick to it all week im selling my car!
Course, its going to be difficult cos im away in Teneriffe from the 12th to the 22nd, so no commuting there - lots of alcohol and food, gonna be hard to start again!

mines a company van (although i do have a car im trying to sell at the moment too!) which will end up left in the yard during the week and i'll only use it weekends if the commute goes well

plus the GF has promised me whatever bike i want for next spring providing the regular commute is well in place and im on the way to losing all the weight ... great incentive

You could try hiring a bike out there, new experience navigating on the "wrong" side of the road, keep your hand/ legs in so to speak. I'm enjoying the reports keep them coming, I have also just started to bike after a gap of 40Yrs, am retired so dont commute to work but am enjoying the new challenge, have also joined the SAS :-( Cheers Erdefen

Incentives always help! I have 2 main ones:
1) Fitness - odd as it is, i feel fitter already and more alert and "smug" that im getting the exercise i need (sat in an office at a desk all day is not good for your health!) 2) Money - all in all i will be saving approx. £1500 a year AT LEAST by commuting to work by cycle - save the insurance money and buy a decent bike - plus the money I get from selling my car can go towards paying off one of my credit cards.
all in all the only downside is the winter commute which will be tough but i AM going to do it!

Nothing to stop you hiring a bike for a few days when you're out there, to explore the island a bit.
The handy phrase: "Quiero alquilar una bicicleta, por favor."

oh god nooo - all inclusive means not even leaving the complex - mmmm voooooodka!

You sad [censored]. What's the point of flying all the way to beautiful Islas Canarias if you're then going to sit in the hotel all day and get drunk. Why not just spend a week at your local Hilton, or pop over to Centre Parcs?

as he would have to sacrifice an arm and a leg for the prices ... an all inclusive in GB including drink, (albeit dodgy cheap stuff in most places that do all inclusive abroad) surely would be cost prohibitive?
