I just got a heart rate monitor and a book on effort based training.
phase I of the training program has me starting out easy, keeping
workouts within 65-75% of target heart rate. the problem is... no
matter how easy I jog, it puts me over my training zone. is it ok if I
do these workouts at walking pace?

the 220 minus your age to find your max rule has a lot of variability
from person to person. If you are comfortable with the effort you are
breathing then that is a good level. You can always try the "talk test"
where if you can talk and run your heart rate is a good level.Quoted message said:
From my experience it doesn't take much for me to get over 75% of my
supposed max. I can run pretty comfortably at that level and not feel
as though I am taxing myself. And there are times when 75% is not as
comfortable. I can get my heart rate up above 65% running with my
slowest of friends. If you walk until your heart rate is in an acceptable level you will be
walking a long time before you get up to a jog. Avoid the huffing and
puffing and you'll be fine regardless of what your monitor reads.Of course see a doctor if you find that your heart rate is soaring
high.Andy

your goals? As someone else said, what is your age, height and weight? What
is your heart rate (HR) when running at an easy pace? It's too imprecise to use a general formula for maximum HR. It can also be
difficult to run easily enough when you're starting out. Generally speaking,
you want to run and not walk if you are training to run. That being said,
there's nothing wrong with doing periodic short walk breaks when you start
your training. This is often better than running at too hard a pace, which
will make it difficult to maintain consistency. I see so many people running
on weekends who would be far better off mixing running and walking than
trying to force themselves to run every step.-Tony

Get rid of the HRM...
Chances are you are using the wrong value for HRmax.
Run at a pace that you can converse at and you will be okay.

would have a hard time staying strictly under 75%. It's ore realistic to
aim for under 85%.Note that as others have pointed out, these percentages don't mean very much
unless you have a good measure of your maximum heart rate.Cheers,
