"Average" Upper Body Strength?

  1. Hello!

    I've been perusing past posts and see a lot of people mention that they
    have "average" upper body strength or "above average" strength.

    QUESTION: Does anyone know of a source/study (Journal of Strength and
    Conditioning Research, American College of Sports Medicine) of
    quantifying "average" upper body strength? For this question, I am
    limiting my definition of upper body strength to a bench press or
    military press like activity.

    Basically, I'm looking to see if there is a regression
    equation/normative database out there that satisfactorially describes
    upper body strength based on age, height and weight. I know there
    there will be differences in lean mass/fat mass that can account for
    strength differences when using these equations. I'm just looking for
    a good "guess" right now.

    When I was in high school, if you could bench press your bodyweight, you got
    an 'A', so I guess that was considered above average (for that age group, of
    course, and that time, which was 30-some years ago.)

    Not easy to picture/grasp everything, as illustrations are limited, but

  6. You might try emailing Clarence Bass at cbass.com. Great site, nice guy,
    knowledgeable about a lot things, esp. lifting. Might have leads for you.

    You might use pubmed, or some equivalent fitness index, like what our
    resident igneranuses Blare/Garrison use to sound intelligent.
    Unfortunately, you only get half-assed abstracts, and it isn't clear how
    comprehensive these services are. Index Medicus *is* pretty comprehensive,
    but don't know about it's online availability.

    Lest the articles you seek not be available (and it *is* a very interesting
    topic), you might try boot-strapping some stuff for yourself, extrapolating
    from perhaps calisthenic data, 1-RM formulas, and other basic data.
    Calisthenic data might be more popular.

    For example, a pushup is roughly equiv to a bp of 2/3 your BW (do one on a
    bathroom scale). If a population cross-section can do on avg, say, 5, and
    you use one of the 5-RM-to-1 RM formulas around, you can "deduce" a 1-RM
    lift for that population.
    Ditto kneebends, and perhaps chinups visavis curls (to some extent), etc.
    Along w/ this, you might factor in BMI to get an idea of average
    cross-section areas of a given muscle (incl. fat/lean cross sections), using
    that to extrapolate data, as well as other "trends", such as the maximum
    lifts of competitive powerlifters, eg, 3x BW for 150# lifters, and 2xBW for
    the heavywt lifters, a trend (not the lifts themselves, of course) that
    should be followed in the general population.

    There are proly other "tricks" you could use as well.

    I seem to recall general articles on how the avg American performs vs. the
    avg European, etc. Might find some interesting stuff in epidemiology
    journals, or sumpn.
