  1. I started out on a cannondale cad 3 touring bike. rode it for 6 months, then stole father in laws kestrel 200 sci. It was a little faster than my cannondale. This week I just got a clean like new trek 5500 and can climb a lot better than on the other 2 bikes ? the trek has a 12- 23 cassete while the other two have 12-27 cassetes. Am I now a cycling god , or the placebo effect , or just a lighter much better bike any Ideas????????

Dura ace does blow 105 away no doubt about it faster shifting by far.

The Trek would outclimb the C'Dale, no doubt. As for the Kestrel, what wheels were on it? The Trek probably has Bonty Race X Lites or something similar (~1500g)...maybe the Kestrel had a shoddy set of wheels with old beat up hubs. Maybe the groupset (was it 105 on the Kestrel) hadn't been serviced in a long time? Hard to say.

I'd say mixture of better equipment and placebo effect. I had the same experience when going from a beat up steel frame to brand new carbon fibre LOOK. The first climb I did, I knocked 10% off my PB!

I probably shouldn't ask but I will, what is the front ring?

    105 has x-42 or 39 while Dura-Ace is x-42 or 44 (Tri), x-42 or 39 (Reg.) while the tripple has a 30.

All three bikes have 53x39 c,dale and kestrel have 12x27, trek has 12x23. C,dale is 105 /cad3 touring frame with 32 spoke velocity, kestrel is about 6-8 years old with rx100, and ultegra and spinergy xareo's, trek is D/A with mavic cosmic's. It must be the weight of the bike , but it couldn't be more than a few pounds or 3.I don't care I'm loving it. Thanks for your reply's

  5. I've got three words for you:
    Specialized Allez Sport!
That's the heavy dog I ride. For $800, you can't get much better. And I still keep up with the race team. You should've seen the wheels it came with!

Not surprised at all. You're experiencing NBS, or "new bike syndrome". It's common around here. Gives you super-human performance for the first few rides.

The duration of NBS (in weeks) is directly proportional to the amount you've spent (in thousands). Guys with new Litespeeds, Merlins or custom SANOs (local builder) seem to ride strong every weekend for a month or more.

Warning: Even mild cases of NBS have presented extreme side effects of FDMD (Few Dollars More Disorder), in which the happy new bike owner is cast into deep despair about how their bike could be "just a little bit faster".
