My Sachs 7 speed hub began skipping in the higher gears,(5-7), so I disassebled to see was ist los. There seems to be a large amount of free play between the meshing of the coupling gear, or sliding clutch if you prefer, and the ring gear. The engaging teeth on both the coupler and ring gear look to be somewhat rounded and worn. I am pretty sure this is where the skipping is happening as it is the ring gear which carries the pawls for those gears. Is it normal for these parts to wear out after a few years use? Is it worth ordering replacement parts? (Asssuming they are even available)
Maybe it is time to get another Rohloff.

DanOK, so after a lot of head scratching and studying the power flow on this unit, I realize that I was somewhat mistaken in my original view of the problem. In the low gears, the coupler engages the drive unit to the ring gear, and in the higher gears, the coupler is pushed in to engage the gear carrier which in turn drives the ring gear. The meshing of the coupler to the gear carrier is a very positive engagement, so I am pretty sure the skipping is not happening there. That leaves the pawls on the ring gear as the likely culprit. The pawls themselves look OK, but the teeth on the inside of the hub feel a bit worn.
Not much to lose at this point, so I think I will try sharpening the pawls a wee bit.
All is not lost yet.
