I too have tried doing this. There are about four regular commuters on my route plus the odd postman
and paper boy/girl.

I used to do one about 50+ but never managed more than 3 days a week.

How's about with the most climbing/altitude? Did one twice (and it was from home to work in
the shortest AND most sensible route) that involved about 500m of climbing, with a highest
point of 450m ?

LOL mine is a mere 16 mile round trip and I think now I would be ashamed to "motor" that distance!

I see probably about 4 or 5 other cyclists on my commute - which is good - get all those cycle
lanes to myself

Sadly, we are programmed to believe the "correct" and "civilised" way to behave is to fall out of
your front door into your car, and out of your car into the door of your destination - regardless of
the length of the journey.

Sadly, many journalists (such as C*a*kson) help to propagate that vision.

Just been an item on the local (Look East) news about the fall in use of bicycles in Peterborough.
Methinks we still have a long way to go.

I work at home. Once a week I have to show my face at the office. Home is in Llandrindod. The office
is next to Marylebone station in London. That's 165 miles each way by the most direct route.

OK, so I admit that I use the camper van for 155 miles of that and only actually cycle a twenty mile
round trip.

Funnily enough, I only ever see five or six other cyclists on the same route (Harrow Road mainly),
but when I used to commute daily from Lewisham to Marylebone it was not unusual to meet dozens.

nice going, mines going to be 30 mile round trip when i work upto it and actually have a bloody
working bike to do it, grrrrr .. another story!

i only see a couple of cyclists now and again on my route whilst driving and rarely going the same
direction as me ... i'll be increasing these numbers once i get my working bike back

can definately see the advantage of having more than 1 working bike - once i can replace mine
next spring i'll keep it in good order as a spare for problem times so i dont lose out on my
commute miles

But there's plenty of regulars - at least at this time of year - going from E17 to the City and

A lot of people here are saying they see so few cyclists on their commute
in. It's not a lot compared to the cars but on my trip from Ilford to Aldgate (EC3) which must be
about 8 miles each way I see dozens and dozens, especially down the A11, but the cycling
conditions are awful (lumpy roads, flyovers, bad drivers [censored] nilly). Who knew?

To be recommended if you are thinking of replacing a car by commuting by bike to work. I have a
second, "best" bike that I keep for weekend rides, tours, etc, but it has helped me out a few when
my main commuting bike is broken.

I manage about 26 miles round trip. I'm impressed by the mileage, but also by the proportion of your life you must be devoting to commuting.

I rarely see any cyclists for the 9 miles of my journey that crosses the fens, but when I get to Peterborough they're not uncommon.

I live in Peterborough, and I have seen little change in the amount of bikes that are around town. I
have recently begun to cycle into work from one side to the other (only about 5.5 miles) going past
the centre and I do not find the traffic too bad. There are the odd tossers but generally I have no
problems. Even the bus drivers are considerate. Before cycling I used the bus - I do not own a car
or driving license.

Congleton to Manchester - a round trip of 47 miles daily. I often extend this to go the 'pretty'
route home which makes it a nice round 55 miles.

My max was 26 miles Alton to Basingstoke (don't know if it actually *was* 26 as I never measured it.

I see loads and loads up the King's Road, the Mall and Strand. They provide a nice cooling breeze as
they whoosh past me while I wait at red lights, pedestrian crossing, etc.

I guess once a week doesn't really count as a commute, but I've been riding to work and back on
Wednesdays since I got my new road bike, and that's 26 miles each way. For anyone who knows South
Bucks, I ride from Great Kingshill to Staines via Beaconsfield, Stoke Poges, Slough, Datchet and
Wraysbury, and I rarely see other cyclists, apart from the odd postie. Best time so far is 1hr 25
going in, and 1hr 35 coming back

It's nice to get some exercise mid-week, but evening commitments on other days mean I couldn't do it
every day even if I wanted to. I intend to continue until I can't ride home in daylight - I don't
fancy doing the country lanes after dark...
