Can I use a road derailer designed for a 52t large ring with a 48t large
chainring? Or will I need to switch to a 'mountain bike' derailer?
Thanks,
-Mike

_ I'd try it first and see how it works. A lot depends on what
other chainrings you are using and what you are using to shift
it with. You can improve the shifting by grinding the cage, if
you need to. The closer the outer curve of the cage matches the
curve of the chainring, the better your shifting will be.
_ Most cyclocross bikes come setup this way and they do alright.

I put a 48 outer chainring on an Ultegra double last year. It shifts
fine, but the best thing is that I can use the 48 big ring a lot more
that a 52 in everyday riding.

Thanks! Would there be any problem with a 26t inner ring instead of the
original 34t small ring? I'm replacing a 30-42-52 with a 26-36-48.

Grr...the original ring was 30t, not 34t. Sorry!

You should have no trouble. I use a mid-80s campy Record derailleur with
a 46/30 front (94mm mountain-bike cranks) with no trouble. For tours I
even add a 22-tooth granny (great-granny?) and it works fine.

_ I used a road triple on my Surly X-check with the same ring
setup and it worked reasonably well out of the dirt and mud. I
have to say that switching to a Deore MTB derailler worked much
better, but unless you have friction shifting on the front this
is not easily done. However, now the bike has no shifters at
all....
